HOW UNITED NATIONS TOURISM DELEGATION PARTICIPATED IN 2024 UDIROKO FESTIVAL IN ADO-EKITI
The Udiroko Festival, a time-honored celebration of the vibrant cultural heritage of Ado Ekiti, received the distinguished honor of hosting a delegation from the United Nations Tourism Organization.
The delegation, which included Mr. Marcel Leijzer, Precious Ovahabonosa, and Okemini Dike was invited to Ekiti State by Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji for the assessment of the tourism potentialites of Ekiti State for the production of the Ekiti State Tourism Development Master Plan
Cultural Tourism is one of the products which Ekiti State has in abundance which Udiroko Festival is a major component.
The Director General of the Ekiti State Bureau of Tourism Development, Barrister Wale Ojo- Lanre led the UN Tóurism Delegation to the palace of the Ewi of Ado Ekiti to participate in this year’s festival underscoring the festival’s significance on both a local and global stage.
The festival’s events kicked off with a grand welcome by the Ewi of Ado Ekiti Oba Rufus Adeyemi Adejuyigbe Aladesanmi III traditional rulers, and a host of dignitaries, reflecting on the enduring legacy of the Udiroko Festival and its crucial role in promoting cultural tourism.
The presence of the UN delegation highlighted the festival’s importance in fostering cultural dialogue and global understanding through tourism.
The Udiroko Festival, an annual event that dates back several centuries, serves as a vibrant platform celebrating the agricultural bounty of the region, traditional crafts, and the rich history and customs of the Ado Ekiti people. Featured events include, Ado Ewi War Chiefs parade , traditional women dancing group display , music and dance performances by various age grades , that captivate both locals and visitors alike.
Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji expressed deep appreciation for the UN delegation’s attendance, stating, “The Udiroko Festival is not just a celebration; it is a demonstration of our unity, resilience, and the richness of our heritage. We are honored by the presence of the United Nations Tourism Organization, which reaffirms our commitment to promoting cultural tourism in Ekiti State and beyond.”
During their visit, members of the delegation engaged in discussions with local leaders and community stakeholders, exploring strategies to enhance cultural tourism development and promote sustainable tourism practices in the state.
The collaboration aims to leverage the festival’s success to attract a broader audience while preserving the local traditions that make it unique.
