AIYEDATIWA PUTS ONDO STATE SPORTS DEVELOPMENT ON GLOBAL STAGE

For many years, Ondo State’s participation in international sporting activities remained limited. However, under the purposeful leadership of Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, the narrative is changing, as renewed attention to sports development is beginning to yield remarkable results.
In a significant step toward repositioning the state’s sports sector, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Segun Omoyofunmi, facilitated the registration of Ondo State delegates to join Team Nigeria at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom.
The Commonwealth Games is a quadrennial international multi-sport event that brings together athletes from across the Commonwealth Nations. The Games, first held in 1930 as the British Empire Games, have grown into one of the world’s major international sporting events.
The Ondo State delegation, comprising government officials and sports representatives, arrived in the United Kingdom on Thursday to join Team Nigeria in Glasgow ahead of the opening ceremony.
Speaking on the development, Hon. Segun Omoyofunmi commended Governor Aiyedatiwa for his commitment to the rapid development of sports in Ondo State. He noted that the Governor’s support and renewed investment in the sector are creating opportunities for the state to participate more actively in sporting events on the global stage.
The participation of Ondo State at the 2026 Commonwealth Games is not only a milestone for the state’s sports sector but also a reflection of the administration’s commitment to discovering, nurturing, and promoting sporting talents while positioning Ondo State as a force to be reckoned with in global sports.
Under Governor Aiyedatiwa, Ondo State is steadily moving from the sidelines to the global sporting arena.
Similarly, Ondo state-born Gbemisola Ijibamigbe the captain of the Nigeria Wheelchair Basketball expressed deep appreciation to the governor for his commitment to sports development.
The governor who spoke through the deputy governor, Dr. Olayide Owolabi Adelami encouraged the participants to go for gold.
“You have to put in your best. The state is proud of you and we are praying for you to come out in flying colours “, he said.
