IROKO OF THE UNIVERSE AT 72: A Timeless Celebration of Dr. Olusegun Abayomi Mimiko, “the Great Guy” Whose Legacy of Visionary Leadership, Compassionate Governance and Transformational Service Continues to Illuminate Ondo State and Inspire Generations
By Dr Felix Babatunde Ale
There are extraordinary individuals whose lives transcend the limitations of time and office, men whose enduring impact continues to resonate long after they have left positions of authority.
Such men are not merely remembered for the titles they held but celebrated for the positive changes they brought into the lives of people and the institutions they transformed.
As Dr. Olusegun Abayomi Mimiko, popularly revered as the Iroko of the Universe, celebrates his 72nd birthday anniversary, it is both fitting and imperative to pay glowing tribute to a statesman, physician, administrator, nation-builder and distinguished son of Ondo Kingdom whose remarkable contributions have left an indelible imprint on the developmental trajectory of Ondo State and Nigeria.
This celebration goes far beyond the commemoration of a birthday. It is an opportunity to reflect on a life devoted to public service, visionary leadership, excellence and humanity.
It is a celebration of a man who has consistently demonstrated that leadership is not about occupying public office but about using public office as a platform for service, transformation and the betterment of society.
Throughout his distinguished career spanning several decades, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko has exemplified the very best traditions of leadership, integrity, courage, compassion and commitment to the common good.
History has a unique way of separating ordinary public officials from truly exceptional leaders. While many pass through positions of authority without leaving any meaningful legacy, a few rise above the ordinary and become symbols of excellence whose achievements continue to inspire generations. Dr. Mimiko belongs firmly in the latter category.
His illustrious service as a two-term Honourable Commissioner for Health in Ondo State, Secretary to the State Government, Honourable Minister of Housing and Urban Development, and subsequently as a two-term Executive Governor of Ondo State, stands as eloquent testimony to a life of uncommon dedication and enviable accomplishment.
One of the most remarkable aspects of Dr. Mimiko’s public life has been his unwavering commitment to the welfare of ordinary people. His understanding of governance has always been rooted in the belief that the primary purpose of leadership is to improve the quality of life of citizens.
This philosophy found practical expression in every office he occupied. As Commissioner for Health in Ondo State, he distinguished himself through innovative reforms and strategic interventions designed to improve healthcare delivery.
Long before healthcare became a fashionable subject in governance discussions, Dr. Mimiko recognized the critical importance of quality healthcare as a foundation for sustainable development. His efforts during that period earned widespread respect and established him as a visionary public servant with a deep understanding of human needs and societal development.
His subsequent appointment as Secretary to the State Government further showcased his impressive administrative abilities. In that strategic position, he demonstrated exceptional capacity for coordination, consensus building and policy implementation.
His reputation as a thoughtful and highly effective administrator continued to grow, reinforcing the confidence that many had already developed in his leadership capabilities.
At the national level, his tenure as Honourable Minister of Housing and Urban Development provided another opportunity for him to contribute significantly to Nigeria’s development. Once again, he brought to the position the same diligence, focus, innovation and sense of purpose that had characterized his earlier public service.
Yet, distinguished as these appointments were, it was arguably as Executive Governor of Ondo State that Dr. Mimiko fully etched his name into the annals of history.
His governorship years remain among the most memorable and consequential periods in the history of the Sunshine State. Under his leadership, governance became more people-centred, more responsive and more focused on the needs of ordinary citizens.
His administration was defined by a relentless pursuit of development, particularly in critical sectors such as healthcare, education, urban renewal and social welfare. He brought vision to governance and infused public service with a human face.
The greatness of a leader is often reflected in his capacity to identify challenges and convert them into opportunities for progress. Dr. Mimiko consistently demonstrated this quality.
His healthcare initiatives became reference points across the country and beyond. His commitment to maternal and child health attracted commendation from various quarters, while his emphasis on primary healthcare reinforced his belief that government must prioritize the wellbeing of the most vulnerable segments of society.
The celebrated philosopher Aristotle once observed that “the aim of the state is the good life.” Few leaders in contemporary Nigeria have pursued this noble objective with the consistency and sincerity demonstrated by Dr. Mimiko.
His governance philosophy reflected not merely a desire to administer public affairs but a profound commitment to improving lives and expanding opportunities for ordinary people.
My personal relationship with Dr. Olusegun Mimiko dates back several years, and throughout this period, I have had ample opportunity to observe not only his public accomplishments but also his personal qualities.
One attribute that has always stood out is his remarkable sense of loyalty and gratitude. In a world where many people quickly forget those who stood by them during difficult periods, Dr. Mimiko remains a man who values relationships and remembers the past.
He maintains meaningful connections with people from various walks of life and never allows status or position to diminish his humanity.
He is approachable, respectful and genuinely interested in the wellbeing of others.
Perhaps one of the most admirable things about him is that he never looks down on anyone.
Regardless of social standing, political affiliation or economic background, he treats people with dignity and respect. These are qualities that cannot be acquired through political office.
They are products of character, upbringing and personal conviction. They explain why Dr. Mimiko enjoys genuine affection from so many people who have encountered him throughout his life’s journey.
My admiration for him reached a particularly memorable point during his first tenure as Governor of Ondo State when I was undertaking a short postgraduate programme at the prestigious Harvard Kennedy School of Government in the United States of America.
During that period, I was deeply impressed by the outstanding work being done by Dr. Mimiko in Ondo State. His administration’s achievements were generating considerable attention, and I never concealed my admiration from fellow participants and friends at Harvard.
Among these friends was an American citizen who currently serves as manager of one of the major cities in the State of Texas. As our interactions continued, I frequently shared insights about developments in Ondo State and the leadership style of Dr. Mimiko.
Over time, my friend became increasingly curious and began independently monitoring Dr. Mimiko’s activities online. He read articles, studied reports and followed developments relating to governance in Ondo State.
His fascination soon grew into profound admiration.
The defining moment came when we travelled together to Orlando, Florida, to attend a communications conference organized by the Public Relations Society of America, where I was scheduled to make a presentation.
During the interactive question-and-answer session, my American friend raised his hand and requested an opportunity to contribute. To my surprise and delight, his question centred on leadership in developing nations, particularly in Africa.
What made the moment unforgettable was that he premised his question on the leadership example of Dr. Olusegun Mimiko. Drawing from the extensive materials he had studied online, he asked how chief executives at state and sub-national levels across Africa could learn from the leadership style, policy innovations and developmental vision exemplified by Dr. Mimiko.
He specifically referenced the Ondo State Governor’s achievements and sought insights into how similar approaches could promote grassroots development throughout the continent.
Needless to say, I was immensely proud.
There, in an international gathering attended by professionals from various countries, an American city manager had chosen Dr. Mimiko as an example of outstanding leadership worthy of study and emulation.
I responded enthusiastically, highlighting the qualities that had distinguished Dr. Mimiko’s administration, particularly his commitment to healthcare reform, educational development and people-centred governance.
The audience appreciated the discussion, but perhaps no one was more satisfied than my friend who had asked the question.
At the conclusion of the session, he walked up to me and said words that I have never forgotten.
Looking directly at me, he remarked: “Felix, unknown to you, I have since been reading a lot about your Governor Mimiko and I must say that I am quite impressed by his style of governance, particularly his health and education policies.
He is indeed a “great guy.”
Those simple yet profound words remain one of the most sincere assessments I have ever heard regarding Dr. Mimiko.
Here was an objective observer with no political interest, no ethnic affiliation and no personal stake in Nigerian politics. Yet after studying Dr. Mimiko’s record, his conclusion was unequivocal: “He is indeed a great guy.”
When we returned to Boston after the conference, my friend showed me numerous articles, reports and materials he had downloaded concerning Dr. Mimiko and his administration.
Among them were several insightful publications and commentaries by the then Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Bisi Kolawole, whose outstanding communication efforts effectively projected the achievements of the government. Till today, whenever my American friend and I have the opportunity to meet or converse on the telephone, he inevitably asks about Dr. Mimiko, whom he still fondly describes as “the great guy.”
The truth is that the description is both appropriate and deserved. Dr. Olusegun Mimiko is indeed a great guy.
His greatness resides not merely in his achievements but also in his humanity. It resides in his compassion, his integrity, his humility and his unwavering commitment to public service. Greatness is not determined by wealth, social status or political influence.
Rather, it is measured by impact. It is measured by the ability to make positive differences in the lives of others. It is measured by the legacy one leaves behind.
Nelson Mandela once famously declared that, “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others.” By this standard, Dr. Mimiko’s life stands as an inspiring success story. The lives he has touched, the institutions he has strengthened and the opportunities he has created constitute a legacy that will endure for generations.
Beyond his public achievements, Dr. Mimiko occupies a deeply personal place in my heart. Apart from being my Governor and the “great guy” in the words of my American friend, he remains one of my most cherished in-laws in Ondo Kingdom.
Following the passing of my beloved and highly revered father-in-law, Chief Fred Ojo Akinpelumi, former Executive Chairman of Ondo West Local Government and Bobatolu of Ondo Kingdom, I experienced an immense sense of loss.
He was a man of integrity, wisdom and immense influence in my life.
In the course of reflecting on that great loss, I told my darling wife that the great man who would henceforth occupy the strategic place held by my late father-in-law in my heart was none other than Dr. Olusegun Abayomi Mimiko. That declaration was born out of profound respect, deep admiration and sincere appreciation for his sterling qualities as a human being and leader.
It reflected my recognition of his status as a human dynamo whose energy, commitment and determination continue to inspire countless people. It reflected my admiration for his outstanding contributions to society and my appreciation for his qualities as a respected leader, quintessential family man, illustrious son of Ondo Kingdom and genuine man of the people.
Leadership expert John C. Maxwell once said, “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way and shows the way.” This quotation captures the essence of Dr. Mimiko’s life and career.
He has consistently known the way through clarity of vision, gone the way through personal commitment and shown the way through practical example. His life demonstrates that true leadership is ultimately about influence, service and legacy.
Equally apt is the observation by Theodore Roosevelt who stated, “People ask the difference between a leader and a boss. The leader leads, and the boss drives.”
Throughout his public career, Dr. Mimiko led. He inspired rather than coerced. He persuaded rather than intimidated. He built relationships rather than barriers.
As an illustrious son of Ondo Kingdom, he has brought immense honour and prestige to his people. His name evokes pride among the people of Ondo State and commands respect across Nigeria.
Through hard work, courage and determination, he has demonstrated what is possible when talent is combined with vision and service.
As he celebrates his 72nd birthday anniversary, it is appropriate to acknowledge the immense debt of gratitude owed to him by numerous individuals and communities whose lives have been positively impacted by his leadership.
His contributions to healthcare, governance, administration and social development have secured him a distinguished place in history. Future generations will study his achievements and draw inspiration from his example.
The renowned American philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson advised humanity to “leave the world a bit better than you found it.” Without question, Dr. Olusegun Abayomi Mimiko has fulfilled this noble standard. Through his service, sacrifice and commitment, he has left Ondo State better than he found it.
Through his leadership, he has enriched public discourse and elevated expectations of governance. Through his example, he has demonstrated that leadership can indeed be compassionate, visionary and transformational.
At 72, he remains a source of inspiration, wisdom and hope. His story reminds us that excellence remains possible in public life and that true greatness is ultimately measured by service to humanity.
Therefore, on this special and historic occasion, I join family members, friends, associates, admirers and countless beneficiaries of his good works in celebrating a truly exceptional leader and statesman. I salute a man of vision, integrity and uncommon humanity.
I celebrate a distinguished physician, accomplished administrator, transformational Governor, respected elder statesman and illustrious son of Ondo Kingdom.
May Almighty God continue to bless Dr. Olusegun Abayomi Mimiko with excellent health, enduring peace, renewed strength, divine wisdom and abundant happiness.
May He continue to grant him many more years of fulfilment, accomplishment and service. May his beloved family continue to enjoy God’s protection, favour and prosperity.
Most importantly, may his remarkable legacy continue to inspire present and future generations of leaders.
Happy 72nd Birthday to the Iroko of the Universe, Dr. Olusegun Abayomi Mimiko.
History has been kind to your legacy because your life has been devoted to noble causes.
Your accomplishments remain enduring monuments to visionary leadership. Your humanity remains your greatest strength. Your story continues to inspire. And in the memorable words of my American friend in Texas, words that have lost none of their meaning over the years, you are indeed, and will always remain, “a great guy.”
Congratulations!!!
