NIGERIAN PRIEST ARRESTED AFTER FATAL SHOOTING OF TEENAGE BOY DURING NEW YEAR MASS
On New Year Day, a tragic incident occurred at St. Columbus Catholic Church in Amaimo, Ikeduru Local Government Area, resulting in the fatal shooting of a teenage boy during a church service.
The Imo State Police Command has since taken the alleged shooter, Rev. Fr. Joseph Enyinnaya, into custody.
The event, which occurred during the January 1 New Year Mass, took a horrifying turn when a group of boys reportedly ignited firecrackers (commonly referred to as “knockouts”) inside the church premises.
Eyewitnesses revealed that the priest, in an attempt to disperse the group, fired several shots into the air using a firearm.
According to a resident, the weapon unexpectedly discharged while the priest was inspecting it, resulting in the fatal shooting of one of the boys.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage among residents, who are demanding thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to the death of the boy.
One community member lamented, “This should never have happened in a place of worship.

The Imo State Police Command spokesperson, Henry Okoye, confirmed the arrest of Rev. Fr. Enyinnaya and assured the public that a comprehensive investigation is in progress.
“We are committed to uncovering the full details surrounding this tragic incident,” Okoye stated.
“Our team is working diligently, and we will provide timely updates as the investigation unfolds.”
The spokesperson refrained from commenting further on the priest’s actions or the specifics of the firearm involved but emphasised the importance of due process.
