FATHER-IN-LAW ARRESTED FOR ‘LOCKING’ WIDOW OUT OF HUSBAND’S HOUSE DAYS AFTER HIS DEATH
The Lagos state police command has arrested a man over allegations of threats, physical assault, and intimidation against his daughter-in-law, who lost her husband just days earlier.
The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) confirmed the arrest on Tuesday following a viral video showing the 28-year-old woman, identified as Tosin, screaming and alleging she was being attacked.
In the clip, the widow could be heard pleading with someone in the room to stop dragging her phone, which she later alleged was smashed on the floor.
“You are inconveniencing me. I will not allow anyone to go on the errand. Leave me alone. Hammed, you did not do well. Death caused all of these things. See the way I am being beaten,” she said.
A male voice was also heard in the background saying, “you will leave this house”.
Tosin lost her husband on July 20 in the Ikorodu area of Lagos. Days after his death, family members allegedly attempted to evict her from her husband’s home.
Harrison Gwamnishu, a human rights activist, claimed the father-in-law and brother-in-law moved into the apartment and ordered the widow and her two sons to relocate to a single room. Gwamnishu also alleged that the family had shared some of the deceased’s properties and attempted to sell his car.
In a statement posted on X, the DSVA said its preliminary findings corroborated the widow’s claims of threats, physical assault, and intimidation.
The agency said the matter had been reported to the Owutu police division and that an investigation has commenced.
“The agency successfully established contact with the survivor, who alleged that she had been subjected to threats to her life, physical assault, and intimidation following the recent death of her husband,” the statement reads.
“As part of its intervention, the Agency commenced engagement with the investigating police officers handling the case. Preliminary feedback from the Police confirms that the alleged perpetrator has been arrested and is currently in custody, while investigations continue.”
