ONDO BOOSTS UNIMEDTH POWER SUPPLY WITH 240KW SOLAR ENERGY SYSTEM
…As Alabi, UNIMEDTH Chief Medical Director Commend Aiyedatiwa for Timely Intervention
The Ondo State Power Company Limited (OSPCL) has successfully switched on a newly installed 240kW solar power system at the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital (UNIMEDTH), Ondo, in a major step towards addressing the hospital’s longstanding electricity challenges and improving healthcare delivery.
The project, approved by the Executive Governor of Ondo State, His Excellency, Dr. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, is designed to provide an alternative and reliable source of electricity to support critical hospital operations and enhance the quality of healthcare services.
Completed within a record time, the project was powered on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, at the instance of the Honourable Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Engr. (Dr.) Johnson Jaiyeola Alabi.
Speaking at the activation, the Commissioner commended Governor Aiyedatiwa for his visionary leadership and commitment to improving public services across the state.
According to him, the intervention demonstrates the Governor’s understanding of the critical role of electricity in healthcare delivery and reflects the practical implementation of his administration’s OUR EASE agenda.
He disclosed that the 240kW solar installation is projected to generate approximately 1,244,160 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity annually, providing a significant boost to the hospital’s power supply.
The Commissioner noted that reliable electricity is indispensable to the effective operation of a teaching hospital, where medical equipment, diagnostic facilities, laboratories, emergency services and other essential healthcare functions depend on a stable power supply.
He expressed optimism that the new installation would help the hospital overcome some of the electricity-related difficulties that have confronted its operations over the years.
Also speaking, the Chief Medical Director of UNIMEDTH, Prof. Gbala Michael, commended Governor Aiyedatiwa for his prompt response to the hospital’s electricity needs.
Describing electricity as the lifeline of a functional hospital, the CMD observed that a dependable power supply is essential for effective healthcare delivery and the smooth operation of medical facilities.
He expressed appreciation for the intervention, while noting that the hospital would welcome further investments in its power infrastructure.
“Though, like Oliver Twist, we need more of it, this is a very good start for us,” he said.
The CMD’s remarks underscored the hospital’s appreciation of the state government’s intervention and its hope for sustained improvements in electricity supply to meet the growing demands of healthcare delivery.
Also present at the activation were the Managing Director of the Ondo State Power Company Limited, Engr. Olumayowa Ajumobi, and other officials.
The successful activation of the solar power system represents another step in the Ondo State Government’s efforts to deploy sustainable energy solutions to support critical public institutions, strengthen healthcare infrastructure and improve the overall well-being of residents.
The development further reinforces the commitment of the Aiyedatiwa administration to translating its policy objectives into practical interventions that directly benefit the people of Ondo State.
According to a statement signed by the Media Officer in the ministry of Energy Resources, Debbie Funmilayo, the projected annual generation of 1,244,160 kWh is equivalent to an average output of approximately 142 kW throughout the year, or a capacity factor of about 59.2% for the 240kW system. This is an excellent projection though subject to other environmental conditions.
