The internet has since gone gaga, that aspirants who wish to run for the office of the president of the federation under the ruling APC will have to cough out one hundred million naira for the expression of interest and nomination forms
So much has since been said a gross
Not a few have lamented that to ask an aspirant to purchase a form for that much is to encourage corruption unbridled
But methinks we are screaming in the wrong direction and wailing a waste
What APC has just told its aspirants silently is that, “we know how much you and your cronies stand to profit from this venture once elected, just bless the party that will make it possible, preliminarily ahead…”
Truth is, so long we make political offices juicy, political parties will have no choice than raise the financial stakes in fulfillment of the law of demand and supply
If on the other hand we make these offices less attractive, the quantum of desperation will drop as only those who genuinely seek to serve will quest to occupy political offices as against what we have today, wherein politics assumes the biggest enterprise herein
So, rather than wail over a hundred million naira, let’s do so in demand that the National Assembly pass a bill encompassing the six spheres below:
- That political office holders must receive medical attention in our public health institutions when ill and their children must attend public schools in Nigeria.
*That political office holders should earn salaries in the scale of civil servants.
- That income and expenditure of government be published and placed in public domain monthly
*That political office holders be stripped of immunity in cases of corruption
- That Special Anticorruption Courts be established wherein graft cases are speedily tried and convictions obtained within six months
- That the penalty for embezzling public funds be life imprisonment without an option of fine
If the National Assembly cannot pass the above bills before the end of this administration, let’s then put an Interim Government in place at its termination, by which we amend the constitution to accommodate the above, before calling for election.
If we fail to toe these steps, our wailing has just begun!
