OAU CONFERS DOCTOR OF SCIENCE ON ENERGY EXPERT, PROF ANTHONY ADEGBULUGBE
…As Ondo-born Awardee promises more contributions to human and societal development
The premises of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife in Osun State witnessed a large turnout of visitors from within and outside Nigeria as the famous citadel of learning rounded off its 48th Convocation ceremony.
It was the aspect featuring those in the Post-Graduate Categories while the school also singled out outstanding and prominent Nigerians for award of honorary doctorate degrees in different disciplines.
The event witnessed conferment of honorary Doctor of Public Administration on the first lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu in recognition of her contributions to humanity.
Also honoured is an Ondo-born energy expert, academic and entrepreneur, Prof. Anthony Adegbulugbe who is an alumnus of the tertiary institution prided by the alumni as “Oba awon university”.
Professor Anthony Olusegun Adegbulugbe was awarded Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) in Energy Planning and Management, Honoris Causa.
The university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Simeon Bamire said the Ondo-born energy expert, academic and entrepreneur Professor Anthony Adegbulugbe has demonstrated extraordinary generosity through the Springland Kids and Youth Foundation (SKY Foundation) and the Anthony and Afolake Adegbulugbe Foundation.
The Vice Chancellor stressed that the honorary award is to recognise significant contributions to humanity by uplifting the less privileged and advancing societal progress through their talents, financial resources, and material support.
Speaking with newsmen, the Awardee, Professor Anthony Adegbulugbe said the honour is a challenge to continue to play his part in development of education as well as individuals.
Apart from humanitarian services, the outstanding academic has also contributed immensely to the oil and gas industry in Nigeria as achievements recorded have place Nigeria on global map.
His company, Green Energy International Limited (GEIL) has achieved many milestones, including operation of
Otakikpo Marginal Field which has achieved several notable accomplishments including
Modular LPG plant which is the first in the country.
This plant will help reduce gas flares and convert gas for domestic use and power generation. .
Green Energy has facilitated construction of an onshore terminal in partnership with Atlantic Terminal Infrastructure Ltd.
The terminal will be the first indigenous terminal infrastructure in the country and will provide an evacuation route for stranded oil fields in the Niger Delta.
Others honoured at the event are Dr. Akinade Akanmu Ogunbiyi, Prince Olutokun Karl Toriola and Daere Afonya-A Akobo.
The event was attended by prominent Nigerians who include former Chief of Defence Staff, General Alani Akinrinade(Rtd), former Governor Segun Oni of Ekiti, former Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola of Osun State, astute Public administrator, Dr. Goke Adegoroye and many others.
BELOW IS THE PROFILE OF PROF. ANTHONY ADEGBULUGBE
Professor Anthony Adegbulugbe is an erudite energy scholar and expert, and a serial entrepreneur of international standing and recognition.
For over four decades, his career and professional accomplishments have cut across the academia, business and government.
Born in Ibadan on 2nd April 1955, of Ondo ancestry and parentage, Prof. Adegbulugbe studied Electrical and Electronics Engineering at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University).
He graduated in June 1976, as the Best Student with a perfect Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 5.0/5.00, an all-time record in this University to date.
Professor Adegbulugbe went on to obtained a Doctorate Degree in Nuclear Materials Engineering and a minor in Energy Planning and Management from the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in the United States, in June 1981.
Without limits, he went through other courses which include Electric System Expansion Planning at Argonne National Laboratory USA; Energy Planning and Management at Brookhaven National Laboratory, U.S.A; and International Gas Business Management Certificate Program at International Human Resources Development Corporation in Boston Massachusetts.
CAREER AND PROFESSIONAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS, & AWARDS:
Prof. Anthony Adegbulugbe has received several awards such as the Best Student with a B.Sc. (Hons) in Electronic and Electrical Engineering (First Class) 1976; Special Alumni Merit Award OAU 2003; Presidential Special Merit Award by Nigerian Society of Engineers 1992; Best Nuclear Materials Paper Award by American Nuclear Society Student Conference, 1980; Runner-up Award for Best Student Paper in the Materials Science and Technology Division, 1981; and the Faculty of Science, Distinguished Scientist Award OAU in 2004,to mention a few.
Remarkably, the Ondo-born energy expert was acknowledged globally as a Contributor to Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPPC) Assessment Reports which won the Panel the Nobel Peace Prize 2007 alongside former Vice President, Al Gore, of the United States.
In 2019, he was awarded Doctor of Letters, Honoris Causa, by Afe Babalola University, Nigeria. In 2023, he became the first recipient of the Obafemi Awolowo University “Excellence in Research Practice Award.”
Prof. Adegbulugbe’s sojourn in the Ivory Towers started in 1977, and quickly saw him rise through the ranks to the pinnacle in his field to become Professor of Energy Economic and Planning. He served as Director, Centre for Energy Research and Development, Obafemi Awolowo University, for over 10 years.
He is well sought-after within Nigeria and around the world for his profound intellectual contributions on several national and international assignments.
At various times, he was Member and Chairman Sub-Committee on Information Technology, Expert Group on Technology Transfer (EGTT), United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Laboratory, UNEP Collaborating Centre for Energy and Environment in Denmark; and (UNFCCC) in Bonn, Germany; Member, Scientific Advisory Panel, RISO National Lead Author, Special Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Report on Member, Energy Committee, World Federation of Engineering Organization (WFEO),CO2 Capture and Storage, WMO and UNEP.
Professor Adegbulugbe served as Coordinating Lead Author on Energy Supply for the Fourth Technical Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), WMO Change (IPCC), WMO and UNEP; Lead Author on Energy Efficiency, Third Technical and UNEP; and Consultant, Energy Sector Management Programme (ESMAP) Study for Nigeria and the World Bank.
He is a Member of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), and the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Knowledge Networks for Sustainable Energy in Africa (KNSEA), International Association of Energy Economists (IAEE) and Africa Energy Policy Research Network (AFREPREN).
In addition, he is Fellow of the Nigerian Economic Society (FNES) and of the Nigerian Association of Energy Economist (FNAEE) in the citation. His vast experience in Consultancy and Project Management spans many countries of theworld.
SERVICE TO HIS COUNTRY:
In service to Nigeria, Prof. Adegbulugbe has worked in several capacities such as Special Adviser to the President on Energy Matters between 2005 and 2007; Chairman, Gas to Power Project under the World Bank Initiative; Chairman, Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority; Chairman, ECOWAS Regional Multi-Sectoral Committee on Energy Access Alternate, Chairman, National Multi-Sectoral Energy Access Committee, and also Member of the Economic Management Team as well as the Presidential Council on Mambila Hydro Project.
As a Nuclear expert, he led the Nigerian Delegation to the International Atomic Energy Agency Conference in 2006.
He is the third, and currently, the Chancellor of the Joseph Ayo Babalola University, Nigeria.
BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN THEORY AND PRACTICAL SOLUTIONS:
Professor Adegbulugbe is the founder of Green Energy International Limited; the company that successfully developed the Otakikpo Marginal field, with steady production of 6,000 barrels of oil per day (bpd).
This resounding and unparallel feat in the industry was achieved within 24 months of commencement of operations. The company is presently undertaking drilling campaign expected to yield about 15,000 bpd.
This year, 2024, the company commissioned the first modular Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) extraction plant in Nigeria; a small asset that is becoming a reference point in marginal field operations.
In the first quarter of 2025, Green Energy- with her strategic partner, Atlantic Terminal Infrastructure Limited (ATIL)- will commission an Onshore Oil Export Terminal, the first built by an indigenous company infive decades of the Nigerian oil industry.
Professor Adegbulugbe is the co-founder and current Chairman of the Board of Triple E Systems Associates Ltd. The company recently commissioned off-grid hybrid mini solar plant to provide electricity to rural Onirogbo community in Odigbo Local Government Area in Ondo State.
Prior to these accomplishments, Prof. Adegbulugbe had worked successfully on different business models that includes a printing company, a modern bakery, superstores, a restaurant, and cybercafé etc. in different parts of Nigeria.
ALIFE-LONG COMMITMENT TO CHRIST, AND TO GIVING:
Professor Adegbulugbe was Ordained a Pastor of the Christ Apostolic Church, CAC, in 1999.
His life and work in the Vineyard of Christ has been as exemplary as his scholarship and professional engagements. He is presently Senior Pastor of the CAC All Saints Chapel CITEC Abuja.
He was recently elevated to the position of Zonal Superintendent to oversee over 25 parishes of the Church.
His generosity and philanthropy are well-known and exceptional. He helps both young and old without discrimination.
Much of his philanthropic work is done through his Non- Governmental Charity Organization, known as Springland Kids and Youth Foundation (Sky Foundation), and also Anthony and Afolake Adegbulugbe Foundation (AAA Foundation).
To date, Sky Foundation and AAA Foundation have awarded annual scholarships to over 500 Nigerians in the last five years, some of whom are already graduates.
The Foundation sponsored two students who recently graduated from Harvard and Cambridge Universities in the United States and the United Kingdom, respectively.
The two Foundations also empowers youth through skills acquisition programs, initiates health programs for the less privileged as well as holds bi-annual camp to build resilience in the future leaders of our country.
More than 50 widows and elderly women are also given monthly stipends for their upkeep through SKY Foundation. As the first recipient of the OAU Excellence in Research Practice Award in 2023, he initiated an ongoing research program for the 230 OAU STARS he is mentoring.
Also, he has donated a building which is presently under construction within the campus.
One remarkable attribute attested to by all is that despite his string of achievements in several areas of endeavor, Prof. Adegbulugbe continues to exude uncommon humility and friendliness which endears him to all strata of the populace.
