ELIZADE UNIVERSITY READS OUT RIOT ACT AS FRESH STUDENTS TAKE OATH OF MATRICULATION
In a drastic step to preserve the sanctity of the University and ward off every form of anti-social behaviour on campus, the Vice-Chancellor of Elizade University, (EU) Ilara-Mokin, Professor Kayode Thadius Ijadunola, has read out a riot act stipulating consequences of various anti-social behaviour.
While administering oath on fresh students, he warned that Elizade University is not a lawless university and will therefore do everything within its power to maintain its standard of zero tolerance for anti-social behaviour.
“The University has zero tolerance for all manners of anti-social behaviour – cultism, illicit drug use/abuse, examination misconduct, physical violence, sexual violence (sexual harassment, sexual assault, rape etc.) Sexual immorality, indecent dressing, cyber bullying, terrorism and sundry issues.”
Prof. Ijadunola told the newly admitted students to uphold the values of discipline and academic integrity, warning that any involvement in anti-social behaviours could lead to expulsion. “Do not feel entitled when interacting with your instructors, as is common today among young people,” insisting that there will be sanctions for deliberate acts of breach of others’ right.
He further warned “If such acts are also criminal in nature, that may bring you in contact with the criminal justice system. That, will not only cut short your dreams and aspirations in life, but may also bring the image of the University and those of your families into disrepute. Please, be properly advised and informed, as ignorance is not an excuse.”
The Vice-Chancellor advised them to shun any acts capable of truncating their stay prematurely in the institution.
“Respect other members of the university community (teaching and non teaching staff and your colleagues alike), as respect is mutual and reciprocal. You can be sure that you will also be treated decently and with dignity by all and sundry if you live by the rules. Our roles here are those of in-loco parentis”
He charged them to embrace the philosophy of the Asian Tiger countries as a strategy to excel in life, noting that it will not only help them in their academic careers but in all sphere of their life by choosing to engage in private study for a minimum number of hours every day, without fail adding that the Daily Habit of Learning (DAHL) adopted by the Asian Tigers had proven to be ideal for those seeking a breakthrough.
“No one says you cannot make a first class. DAHL is the secret of the Asian Tigers countries, and that is why they rule the world today in Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) as well as other subjects.”
“You are here to learn and study; don’t make that a lesser objective while extra curricular affairs become your priority. DAHL may save you in times of illness when you are unable to study close to the exams. Attend classes and participate actively as a matter of priority. Do not play with your electronic gadgets while in class.”
The University don equally warned on self indulgence, “social media and the desire to get rich quick while in school may be conflicts of interests with your career progress. You may end up loosing on both ends.”
Professor Ijadunola also hinted on a work-life balance, “exercise as much as your schedule will permit in order to stay in optimal health; it also promotes cognitive functions and bosts your immunity. You must also take adequate rest especially at night. Do not engage in daily overnight study as this may be deleterious to your health. As you pass through the university, let the university pass through you.”
He enjoined parents to be in constant touch with their wards, asking after their progress and welfare and encouraging them to be of good behaviour.
“Their well-being is a shared responsibility of ours and yours.”
The Vice-Chancellor highlighted the institution’s commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and ethical standards, which aligns with its vision of producing globally competitive graduates, noting,
“We are a leading technology driven institution with our teaching, learning and services largely digitized and real time via unfettered internet access for both staff and students. We prioritize modern pedagogy and a teaching philosophy that promote self-directed learning. All that our students need to do is to apply themselves and take advantage of the myriad of facilities available to aid seamless learning.”
Professor Ijadunola said “the campus environment is serene, comparable to what obtains in the Ivy League schools across the world, pristine in ambience and ready to support meaningful scholarship and research among staff and students alike. We owe this largely to the benevolence of the founder, Chief Michael Ade.Ojo, a man of nothing else but excellence and distinction.”
667 new students were matriculated into its academic community at the 13th matriculation ceremony comprising 605 undergraduates and 62 postgraduates across various faculties.
Founded in 2012 by Chief Michael Ade.Ojo, Elizade University began operations in 2013 with 64 students across 13 programs in two faculties.
Today, the institution boasts 34 accredited undergraduate programs across five faculties and 25 postgraduate programs in four faculties.
With a beautiful aesthetic ambience combined with cutting edge technology-driven teaching, learning, research and service, Elizade University continues to position itself as a center of academic excellence with the Vice-Chancellor expressing optimism that the newly matriculated students would uphold the institution’s values and make significant contributions to society upon graduation.
The ceremony concluded with the administration of the Matriculation Oath, formally inducting the students into the university community.
