HOW ONDO FIRE SERVICE’S PROMPT RESPONSE AVERTED TANKER EXPLOSION AT IGBARA-OKE
A major disaster was narrowly averted in Ondo State Tuesday night, when a petrol-laden tanker carrying 42,000 litres of fuel skidded off the Ilesa Expressway at Igbara-Oke Junction.
The truck, which posed a serious explosion risk, was swiftly brought under control by operatives of the Ondo State Fire Service, who responded promptly to the emergency.
Eyewitnesses described a scene of panic and alarm as the fully loaded liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tanker veered out of control, posing an imminent threat to both road users and residents in the area.
The location frequented by heavy vehicular traffic could have become the site of a devastating explosion, endangering countless lives and properties.
Responding to urgent distress calls, personnel of the Ondo State Fire Service arrived promptly at the scene and immediately took charge of the situation.
Working tirelessly into the early hours of the morning, the firemen deployed advanced cooling techniques and implemented strategic containment procedures to stabilize the highly volatile truck and prevent any form of ignition.
Their coordinated response and technical expertise successfully diffused the threat, as the area was cordoned off during the operation, and the fire service maintained a high level of vigilance until the risk was fully neutralized.
In the aftermath of the incident, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Infrastructure, Lands, and Housing, Engr. Ayorinde Olawoye, visited the scene and praised the professionalism of the fire personnel.
He commended Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa for his administration’s proactive investment in modern fire-fighting equipment, which he said was instrumental in managing the emergency effectively.
“This is yet another testament to the importance of equipping our emergency response agencies. If not for the modern tools provided by the Aiyedatiwa-led administration and the unwavering dedication of our fire service personnel, we could have been reporting a very tragic event today”, Engr. Olawoye said.
