PRESS CONFERENCE ADDRESS BY THE VICE CHANCELLOR, ADEKUNLE AJASIN UNIVERSITY, AKUNGBA-AKOKO, ONDO STATE, NIGERIA, PROFESSOR OLUGBENGA E. IGE, FOR THE 14TH CONVOCATION CEREMONY, HELD AT THE SENATE CHAMBER ON MONDAY, 8 DECEMBER 2025.
Principal Officers of the University,
Deans of Faculty,
Directors of Centres and Institutes,
Distinguished Professors and Members of the Senate,
Heads of Departments and Units,
Members of Staff and Students,
Distinguished Gentlemen of the Press,
Ladies and Gentlemen
A very good morning to you all.
I stand before you today at a powerful confluence of past, present, and future.
The present finds us in the week of our 14th Convocation, a ceremony of joy where 5,799 individuals will receive the harvest of their years of labour.
The future is theirs, a world of infinite possibility. But the past the past is the story of how this university prepared them for it. That is the story I wish to share with you today.
For this story carries a personal bookmark: this will be the final Convocation I address as the Vice Chancellor of this great citadel of knowledge. It prompts a season of reflection.
Five years ago, I arrived with a blueprint and a prayer. The question was not simply, Can we manage? but rather, Can we transform? Could we build a university that is not just respected in Ondo State, but referenced across Nigeria and recognised worldwide?
Today, I am here to testify to what collective will, divine grace, and an unwavering focus on excellence can achieve. I am humbled by how far we have come, guided by that same grace and sustained by our collective commitment.
When I assumed office on 7 July 2021, I did so with a heart full of hope and a clear vision: to make Adekunle Ajasin University a cynosure of excellence; to strengthen staff and student welfare; to deepen academic integrity; to improve our internally generated revenue; to foster innovation; and to rebrand our image for global relevance.
Those goals were not mere words they became our blueprint for action.
Today, I am grateful to God and proud to report that, together, we have made significant strides in every area we targeted. Our University has not only sustained its reputation as one of the premier state universities in Nigeria but has also advanced notably in research, digital learning, staff development, and community service.
We have expanded partnerships, modernised infrastructure, and maintained peace and stability on our campus, even in challenging times.
None of these achievements would have been possible without the unwavering support of His Excellency Dr. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, Governor of Ondo State and the Visitor to the University, the Governing Council, the Senate, the Management, our dedicated staff and students, our proud alumni, and our host community.
In light of the foregoing, you will appreciate why this Convocation press briefing is broader in scope than a conventional one. Beyond reviewing the University’s strides since the last Convocation, it necessarily offers broad strokes on the canvas of time, covering the period since 7 July 2021, when we assumed office.
Over the past few days, our university has buzzed with vibrant activities, including a religious service and a keep-fit exercise held last Friday and Saturday, respectively.
A key part of these activities is, of course, this very press conference with you, our esteemed press corps.
Looking ahead, tomorrow, Tuesday, December 9, 2025, will witness an innovative Research, Development and Innovation Fair, followed by captivating drama performances at 4:00 p.m.
We invite you to join us for athletic competitions and a friendly football match on Wednesday, December 10.
Furthermore, a Convocation Lecture titled Strengthening the Academic Tradition in the Nigerian University System, will be delivered by Professor Idowu Olayinka, former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan.
The distinguished highlight of every Convocation Ceremony is the formal presentation of our graduating cohort, which will take place on Friday, 12th and Saturday, 13th December 2025.
This moment allows us to honour their academic journey, recognise their sacrifices, and celebrate their collective success.
For this 14th Convocation, a total of 5,799 students from our various Faculties and the Postgraduate School will be conferred with their degrees.

Milestone of Our Stewardship
Academic Integrity
The most valuable currency of any university is its academic integrity. At Adekunle Ajasin University, we have continued to safeguard the integrity of our academic programmes in line with our vision to be a foremost institution that moves manpower development in the direction of self-apprenticeship; a first-class University in research, knowledge, character, and service to humanity.
From the outset, we confronted this critical area by restoring academic integrity and ensuring that our programmes and all associated processes were placed on the right course.
We recognised that if our academic foundation was to command credibility, it had to be sound and uncompromising.
Accordingly, leveraging established structures across the University, we undertook a comprehensive overhaul of our academic programmes, making them more relevant, responsive, and useful to the public.
We invested liberally in capacity-building initiatives for our lecturers and staff at all levels; expanded the facilities available for teaching and research; strengthened examination and assessment processes with greater transparency; and upheld the rights and privileges of students while equally emphasising their responsibilities.
We significantly enhanced students out-of-class learning experience and inspired the University community to imagine new possibilities both collectively and individually anchored on the discipline of the right attitude.
In all respects, quality assurance was mainstreamed as a governing principle.
These measures have yielded far-reaching dividends. They have reinforced our standing as a frontline institution in the country and made our University a preferred and trusted destination for the thousands of candidates aspiring to study here.
Establishment Of New Faculties/ Departments
Not only have we sustained all our existing programmes, but we have also significantly broadened our academic landscape by expanding the number of faculties from seven to ten.
We pursued a vigorous modernisation agenda with the establishment of three new faculties namely, the Faculties of Administration and Management Sciences, Allied Health Sciences, and Computing Alongside the new Departments of French, Food Science and Technology and Library and Information Service.
The Faculty of Administration and Management Sciences offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, and Public Administration.
The Faculty of Allied Health Sciences provides degrees in Nursing Science, Medical Laboratory Science, and Public Health, while the Faculty of Computing runs programmes in Cyber Security, Data Science, Information Communication Technology, Information Systems, and Software Engineering.
These initiatives have not only strengthened the university’s growing profile but also provide students with expanded opportunities to pursue diverse and contemporary fields of study.
Programme Accreditation and Resources Verification by NUC
The evidence of our progress is clear. Not only have all our academic programmes consistently secured 100 per cent accreditation status from the National Universities Commission (NUC), we have also produced confident, critical, and excellent students who embody the quality of our academic enterprise.
Only recently, the University concluded another round of NUC accreditation, and preliminary reports indicate that all the programmes performed impressively.
I am also pleased to report that all our new programmes have undergone resource verification by the National Universities Commission and the results have been excellently positive.
Similarly, the University’s professional programmes, such as Law, Accounting, Architecture, Finance, and Geology, undergo periodic accreditation by their respective professional bodies.
These quality-assurance structures have been diligently strengthened year after year to ensure the production of competent and confident graduates.
Without doubt, we are fully assured that the graduates we release into the society are equipped not only with the essential skills required to make meaningful contributions to both national and global development, but also with the entrepreneurial competencies necessary to thrive in an economy that increasingly prioritises private enterprise.
It may interest you, just a few months ago, we received a report that three of our law graduates, Ojuko Temitayo Victoria, Eniola Alice Aladeloba and Akinola Shalom Tinuoluwa, who graduated in 2024, made First Class in the Final examination of the Nigerian Law School.
Research and Innovation
For us in AAUA, research and innovation remain fundamental pillars of the University’s mandate.
We have not rested on our oars; instead, we have continued to entrench research and innovation exhibitions as principal elements of our core values.
In recent years, the University has demonstrated remarkable versatility in several research and innovation initiatives championed by both staff and students.
We have consistently celebrated outstanding achievements and encouraged the emergence of fresh, inventive ideas across our community. Most recently, nine members of staff earned global recognition after being ranked among the top two per cent of academic researchers worldwide.
These nine scholars were listed in the prestigious 2024 Elsevier Stanford Global Ranking of Top Scientists.
This notable accomplishment reaffirms AAUAs distinguished position on the international academic and research landscape.
The recognition, based on rigorous criteria such as research impact, citation indices, and global scholarly contributions, underscores the Universitys expanding influence in cutting-edge research and innovation.
The honourees, drawn from diverse academic fields, exemplify AAUAs enduring tradition of excellence and interdisciplinary advancement.
Among those recognised was Professor Sunday Olatunji, with 129 publications indexed in Scopus and the Web of Science.
He earned special commendation for his pioneering application of machine learning and artificial intelligence to real-life challenges in science, engineering, and the humanities. Professor Olatunji, who currently serves as Dean of Computing, had earlier been named by the National Universities Commission (NUC) as Nigerias best Artificial Intelligence researcher for 2025.
His scholarly record includes over 157 publications on Google Scholar, 4,560 citations, an h-index of 34, and an i10-index of 93.
The other AAUA scholars honoured in the global ranking include Professor Nurudeen Oladoja with 121 publications, Professor Adeleke Ashogbon with 22 publications, Dr Taiwo Agbede with 52 Scopus publications on Google Scholar and 3,751 citations, Dr Taoreed Owolabi with 97 publications, Dr Abayomi Oke with 31 publications, Dr Andrew Falowo with 31 publications, Dr Oluwatobi Oyeneyin with 54 publications, and Dr Damilola Omoboyowa with 50 publications.
Their works, widely indexed in Scopusthe world-renowned abstract and citation databasefurther attest to the high calibre and consistency of scholarship emanating from AAUA.
Progress in the Inaugural Lecture Series
Our Inaugural Lecture Series has seen remarkable advancement. Upon assuming office as the sixth substantive Vice Chancellor of this great institution, I was met with the fact that only 15 such lectures had been delivered since the universitys inception.
I considered this unsatisfactory and therefore made a conscious, deliberate effort to encourage our professors to step forward.
From the 15th edition in 2021, we have now reached the 51st. By Gods grace, the 52nd will be delivered next Tuesday. We are not stopping here; it is our firm determination to achieve even more before the end of this tenure.
This steady progress reflects our enduring commitment to fostering rigorous intellectual discourse and advancing knowledge across disciplines. Through these lectures, our professors have not only shared their expertise but have also provided meaningful insights and solutions to pressing societal challenges.
Partnerships and Collaboration
Aligned with our strategic vision to become a model 21st-century university, we are committed to strengthening our global and local outreach.
A key focus is cultivating substantive partnerships with distinguished institutions worldwide. Notable successes include a dynamic collaboration with Walailak University in Thailand, encompassing staff and student exchanges, infrastructural support, and joint research initiatives.
Furthermore, our partnership with the International Cultural Communications Centre in Malaysia facilitates multifaceted cooperation in academia, cultural understanding, and technological exchange.
Our collaborative network extends to Europe through a significant partnership with Ghent University in Belgium, which involves joint research, staff exchange, and collaborative programme development. Domestically, we are actively engaged in manpower development, exemplified by our training partnership with the Public Staff Training Institute, Ilara Mokin, Ondo State Local Government Service Commission Training School, Itaogbolu.
We have also established formal affiliations with several colleges of education, including Mufthau Lanihun College of Education, Ibadan; Kwara State College of Education (Technical), Lafiagi; City College of Education, Mararaba, Nasarawa State; and Oyo State College of Education, Lanlate.
These strategic alliances are fundamental to advancing our goals in international educational cooperation and local institutional capacity building.
Staff Training
Ladies and Gentlemen, at Adekunle Ajasin University, we operate on a fundamental principle: that a truly successful institution is built upon a capable, motivated, and knowledgeable workforce. It is with this conviction that we place immense and unwavering importance on the continuous training and professional development of our staff.
Our commitment is action-oriented and comprehensive.
We actively encourage and support staff at all levels to participate in a diverse range of learning experiences from internal programmes to local and international conferences, workshops, and seminars. This ensures our people are continually exposed to new knowledge and global best practices.
Furthermore, we consistently fund targeted training programmes designed to equip our employees with the specific competencies required to excel in their respective fields.
A prime illustration of this commitment is our recent partnership with the Virtual Institute for Capacity Building in Higher Education (VICBHE), facilitated by the NUC and TETFund, to deliver specialised international training.
A cohort of twelve academic staff, under the leadership of the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Professor Olusegun Akinwumi, undertook this programme and distinguished themselves by each earning a result of distinction.
Staff Promotion and Recognition
This is another area where we have made significant progress since I assumed office. I am proud to report that no fewer than one hundred and nine academics have been promoted to the rank of Professora testament to the growing scholarly capacity of our university.
Furthermore, we have ensured the timely promotion of staff across all other categories, for both Academic and Non-Academic personnel. Just recently, thirteen and five members of our Non-Academic staff were elevated to the positions of Deputy Registrar and Deputy Bursar, respectively.
These promotions have substantially boosted staff morale, directly enhancing productivity and the quality-of-service delivery across the institution.
Infrastructural Development
It is an undeniable reality that the resources at our disposal are insufficient to build the truly modern, thriving university required for the 21st century. Despite the severe financial constraints facing higher education nationwide -from which AAUA is not exempt – we have nonetheless achieved significant progress.
Through determined effort, the University has completed the construction of the Faculty of Science (Glasshouse) and the new Faculty of The Social Sciences building. Furthermore, we have successfully renovated the 30-Classroom Quadrangle, Intercontinental Hall and Faculty of Education which now wear a completely new and impressive look. Our Business School in Akure has also been upgraded, furnished with modern fittings to provide a more habitable and conducive learning environment.
Most recently, just a few weeks ago, we held the foundation-laying ceremony for a new 80-capacity Hall of Residence on campus. The first since the establishment of this University.
What makes this project particularly special is its foundation – not just in concrete, but in goodwill. It has been buoyed by the generous contributions of our own staff, our alumni bodies, cherished friends of the university, and even our current students. This act of collective investment transcends mere philanthropy; it is a profound vote of confidence in our shared destiny. Each contribution lays a brick in the legacy of AAUA, and for this remarkable demonstration of ownership and faith, we offer our deepest and most sincere appreciation.
Students Support and Welfare
The University maintains an unwavering commitment to enriching the student experience, ensuring it is both academically rewarding and adaptable to individual needs. This is underpinned by initiatives such as comprehensive scholarships and the Work-Study Scheme, which provides students with the opportunity to undertake two hours of daily on-campus employment, culminating in a stipend at the end of each semester. This programme not only alleviates financial pressures but also instils a strong sense of responsibility and work ethic.
Our dedicated Students’ Support Centre offers targeted financial assistance to a diverse student body, including the gifted, those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, and students with physical challenges. In a significant demonstration of our inclusive ethos, the University subsidises half of the tuition fees for all physically challenged students.
Our dedication extends beyond academia to the active promotion of excellence in sports, the arts, and leadership.
We are proud to provide platforms that nurture and develop these vital talents. Embracing innovation, we have integrated technology to enhance campus life; for instance, our electronic voting system for Student Union elections guarantees a process that is transparent, efficient, and inclusive, reflecting our commitment to both democratic principles and technological progress.
Sports Development
Despite financial constraints limiting some of our ambitions, we have remained committed to sports development. We have mainstreamed sport as a platform not merely for winning laurels, but for leadership development and character formation.
This commitment includes encouraging student participation in inter-university competitions and enhancing the student industrial work experience and fieldwork elements of their courses to be more enjoyable and fulfilling.
Our students’ efforts have yielded impressive results, with medals and trophies won in nearly every competition they enter. Most recently, at the Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) finals, our athletes excelled. Egunnu Pere won a gold medal in the 400m Athletics, while Ojo Funmilayo F secured a silver in Table Tennis, and Olurotimi Emmanuel earned a silver in Boxing. Further successes included bronze medals for Lawal Ayomide in Swimming, Adeyemi Ayodeji in Athletics, and Abubakar Jamiu in Swimming.
Entrepreneurial
In line with our strategic objectives, we have taken proactive steps to reinvigorate the Centre for Entrepreneurship Development.
The Centre’s curriculum now emphasises practical skills, offering training to both students and the public in the manufacture of essential items, including footwear, leather goods, fabrics, nylon, soap, and pastries.
This endeavour serves a dual purpose: fostering community development and substantially strengthening our Internal Generated Revenue (IGR).
Concurrently, we have reinforced and diversified the university’s commercial ventures to cater to the needs of our community.
This includes the improved packaging and delivery of our AAUA bottled water. Beyond these commercial efforts, we have also achieved substantial progress in deploying and maintaining advanced technological solutions to enhance the university’s operational efficiency.
Advancement Office
At the heart of our institutional progress lies the University Advancement Office-a dynamic force we have strategically strengthened for the challenges and opportunities ahead.
This investment is already proving its worth, as the office expertly builds bridges with vital partners who share our vision for excellence.
The promising connections now being established are a testament to its work, and we look to the future with the firm belief that these efforts will unlock new pathways for growth and elevate our university to a preeminent position.
Our Esteemed Alumni
A cornerstone of our institutional strength is the vibrant and enduring partnership with our alumni. Their remarkable spirit of loyalty and generosity, evident despite the Association’s relatively young history, commands our profound gratitude.
Their contributions, both in spirit and substance, have left a distinct imprint on our university’s progress.
We are convinced that our alumni are not merely former students; they are lifelong partners in our mission.
By strengthening these bonds, we unlock a reservoir of insight, experience, and support that is indispensable for our journey towards preeminence.
Today, we proudly spotlight just a few of our distinguished graduates who are shaping the world.
In the halls of law and governance, we proudly note the appointments of Hon. Justice O. J. Kpemi and Hon. Justice I. H. Dimehin-Ogunbayo to the Ondo State High Court. Dr Tob Loko was appointed Ondo State Commissioner for Environment. Alhaji Amidu Takuro now serves as Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr Ayodele Akande as Commissioner for Water Resources and Public Sanitation, and Mr Akintayo Oluyi as Senior Special Assistant on Technical Education. Furthermore, pioneer alumnus Mr Allen Sowore serves as Special Adviser on Communication and Strategy to His Excellency Governor Aiyedatiwa.
Our alumnis excellence in public service is also celebrated beyond our state. Ekiti State honoured two of our own with its “Outstanding Civil Servant” award: Mr Ajisafe Abayomi Samuel (English Studies, 2008) for governance and administration, and Mr Akeem Babatunde Osasona (Computer Science, 2017), a physically challenged computer genius, for his immense contributions to innovation and ICT development.
Mr Osasona also serves as the ICT Director for our Global AAUA Alumni Association.
On the international stage, their impact is profound. Mr Patrick Oluyide, the first president of our Alumni Association, has made history by emerging as an International Director at Toastmasters Internationalthe first Nigerian to achieve this in the organisation’s 100-year history.
In the realm of global recognition and scholarship, Oluwadamilola Akintewe, a recent law graduate, has joined the prestigious 10th cohort of the Schwarzman Scholars, the first Nigerian with a wholly domestic education to be selected. Her fellow alumna, Ms. Joy Oluwatoyin Adeboye, was a Top Finalist for the 2024 ORG GLOBAL Impact Award in the United States for her groundbreaking Resilient Girl Initiative.
No doubt, our graduates are literally setting world records. Ebaide Joy undertook a solo motorcycle journey across 20 African countries, seeking a Guinness World Record for the longest such journey by a woman.
And just this September, another alumnus, Oluwaseyi Anifowose, earned his own Guinness World Record for hosting the largest gathering of teachers in the world.
From the courtroom to the commissioners office, from global stages to the pages of the record books, the evidence is unequivocal: AAUA is a proud institution whose graduates are not only marketable but are leading, innovating, and inspiring across every sphere of society.
We invite every graduate to join us in celebrating and building upon this extraordinary legacy.
Staff and Students Unions
On the subject of our industrial relations, let me unequivocally affirm that the University Management maintains a robust, respectful, and mutually beneficial relationship with all staff and students’ unions. This commitment to harmony and dialogue is a cornerstone of our shared vision for progress and excellence.
As a responsive Management, we consistently prioritize the welfare and well-being of our staff.
This is evident in the regular promotions they continue to enjoy and our ongoing engagement, particularly concerning remuneration-related issues. Despite the financial and logistical constraints that challenge our operations, our commitment to our staff remains unwavering.
I wish to express my profound appreciation to the leadership and members of our four staff unionsthe Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT). Your unwavering understanding, support, and exemplary solidarity, especially during challenging times, have been instrumental in fostering a harmonious environment and ensuring the smooth operation of the University.
Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, I am delighted to have this opportunity to acknowledge the exceptional work understanding of our Students’ Union.
Through deliberate effort, we have worked to imbue our students with a new leadership ethos- one that prizes constructive engagement and well-reasoned argument over disruption and violence.
We have strived to make their campus experiences smoother and more efficient, actively embracing technology to streamline their activities.
A prime example is our electronic voting system for Student Union elections, which ensures transparency, efficiency, and inclusivity. This initiative reinforces our dual commitment to fostering democratic values and driving technological advancement.
Donations
Ladies and gentlemen, it is with great pleasure that I again formally acknowledge the generous donation of an ambulance to the university by Honourable Dr. Adegboyega Adefarati.
It is also my great honour to acknowledge and appreciate the generous support provided to our students by several key partners. I extend our deepest gratitude to the Melajoom Foundation, the Bandef-Millennium Educational Scholarship Foundation, the Ondo State Government Scholarship and Bursary Board, and the Delta State Government Scholarship programme, among others.
As we gather to celebrate this Convocation, we honour not only the achievements of our graduands but also the resilience, growth, and enduring progress of our University. Every Convocation is a powerful reminder that learning is a lifelong journeyone that demands discipline, perseverance, and vision.
As I bow out as the 6th substantive Vice Chancellor of this University, in a few months’ time, I do so with profound gratitude and deep reflection. The past five years have been an extraordinary chapter in my professional and personal journey.
Together, we have weathered storms, celebrated victories, and remained steadfast in upholding the noble vision of our founding fathers.
Through collective effort, we have sustained peace on campus, strengthened academic integrity–particularly our stable academic calendar, and pursued innovation with renewed vigour. We have redefined excellence through teamwork, resilience, and a shared determination to move the University forward. Above all, we have demonstrated that when a community is united by purpose, progress becomes inevitable.
I thank you all for being witnesses to this story of collective triumph.
Gentlemen of the press, before I take your questions, I wish to pause and offer a very special word of thanksto you.
Over the past five years, you have been more than just reporters covering our events. You have been chroniclers of our progress, amplifiers of our achievements, and constructive critics when necessary.
You were there to report on the launch of our new faculties. You helped us announce the global recognition of our researchers.
You shared the inspiring stories of our record-breaking alumni with the world. In doing so, you have done a profound service not just to this university, but to the entire cause of education in Nigeria.
You have translated our complex academic strides into narratives the public can understand and celebrate. You have helped shape the perception of AAUA from a strong state university into a nationally recognized and globally competitive institution.
This rebranding, which was a key goal of our administration, would have been impossible without your skilled pens, your probing cameras, and your commitment to telling the Nigerian story with balance and depth.
On a personal note, I have always valued our interactions. Your questions have pushed us to be more transparent, your features have held us accountable to our promises, and your coverage has been a source of great encouragement to our staff, students, and the entire community.
Thank you for being our partners in progress. Thank you for believing in our story. And thank you, most sincerely, for the vital role you play in strengthening our democracy and our institutions through your work.
Thank you, and God bless Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko.
God bless Ondo State, God bless Nigeria.
Prof. Olugbenga E. Ige
Vice Chancellor
