AKURE DIOCESE METHODIST CHURCH LEADERS CHARGED TO PRIORITISE ACCOUNTABILITY, STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP
…As 2026 Diocesan Leaders’ Retreat Holds in Akure
Leaders of the Akure Diocese of Methodist Church Nigeria, have been charged to uphold accountability, discipline and strategic leadership in order to reposition the Church for sustainable growth.
The charge was given during the 2026 Diocesan Leaders’ Retreat held at the Methodist Church Nigeria, Diocese of Akure, Cathedral of Possibilities, Gbogi, Akure.
The retreat attracted ministers, diocesan, circuit and local church officers, chieftaincy title holders, as well as presidents, secretaries and coordinators of the various church arms within the diocese.
Guest speakers, Barrister Abimbola Akinyemi and the Bishop of Owo Diocese of the Methodist Church Nigeria, the Right Reverend Dr. Williams Egbetakin, demystified the responsibilities of church officers and administrators, stressing the need for effective leadership to foster growth and accountability in God’s vineyard.
In his presentation, Bishop Egbetakin outlined the goals of church administrators, particularly Presbyters and Ministers-in-Charge of local churches.
He emphasised that leadership objectives must be specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time-bound.
The Bishop further explained decision-making techniques required of church leaders, including identifying problems, acquiring relevant background information, selecting appropriate lines of action, implementing decisions and evaluating outcomes.
According to him, adherence to these strategies would help reposition the Church in line with the Constitution governing the Methodist Church Nigeria.
Speaking on the foundation and constitutional framework of the Church, Barrister Akinyemi, a member of the committee that amended the Church Constitution in 2021, clarified categories of persons eligible to attend various church meetings and highlighted their respective roles.
He reminded officers that responsibilities within the Church must not be left solely to ministers, stressing that the Methodist Church Nigeria operates with clearly defined rules and regulations guiding its doctrine and administration.
On the importance of Church Councils, Akinyemi noted that the denomination provides room for deliberation and collective decision-making to ensure that matters are handled appropriately and in accordance with laid-down procedures.
The retreat featured interactive sessions, strategic discussions and renewed commitments by participants to strengthen leadership structures across the diocese.
The 2026 Diocesan Leaders’ Retreat not only reinforced the constitutional and administrative framework of the Church but also renewed the resolve of its leaders to promote accountability, unity and purposeful growth.
Participants expressed optimism that the lessons learned would translate into improved governance and spiritual advancement across the Diocese of Akure.
