Plot by Alia to assassinate Akume, Aondoakaa, Ortom over 2027 guber poll exposed
A security advocacy group, Benue Security Watch, has accused the Governor of Benue State, Hyacinth Alia, of allegedly plotting to assassinate the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, amid the lingering leadership crisis within the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The group, which described itself as an independent security network, raised the alarm in a press statement issued on Monday by its Commandant, Comrade Sebastine Akooma.
In the statement, the organisation alleged that the governor was not only targeting Akume but had also perfected plans to eliminate two prominent chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.
According to the group, those allegedly marked for assassination include a former governor of the state, Samuel Ortom, and the PDP governorship candidate, Mike Kaase Aondoakaa (SAN).
Benue Security Watch claimed that the governor had concluded arrangements to deploy a “killer squad” reportedly assembled by a former governor to execute the alleged plot.
The group further alleged that Governor Alia was recently overheard during a telephone conversation expressing fears of losing his re-election bid in 2027 if the PDP candidate was not “taken out of the way” before the polls.
It also stated that intelligence available to it indicated growing anxiety within the governor’s camp over what it described as a strategic alliance between Senator Akume and Ortom, a development it claimed could alter the political dynamics ahead of the next general election.
The statement accused some security operatives in the state of allegedly collaborating with the governor to facilitate the purported assassination plans involving Akume, Ortom and Aondoakaa.
Raising the alarm over what it described as a dangerous trend, the group warned that political tensions in the state were assuming a troubling dimension, with lives allegedly being threatened over electoral contests.
It, therefore, called on the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), and heads of other security agencies to urgently intervene and forestall any breakdown of law and order in Benue State.
The group stressed that the idea of orchestrating assassinations over a governorship election, whose outcome remains uncertain, was both alarming and unacceptable in a democratic setting.
Benue Security Watch disclosed that it had formally petitioned the IGP and the DSS, urging them to investigate the allegations and take necessary steps to protect the individuals named in the alleged plot.
