BOLA AHMED TINUBU: COURAGE TO REFORM AND VISION TO TRANSFORM
By Dr. Felix Babatunde Ale
In the unfolding narrative of Nigeria’s democratic journey, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has emerged as a leader of audacity, vision, and reformist zeal.
His administration, though barely midway into its tenure, has already inscribed indelible landmarks across the nation’s economic, political, and social landscape.
To appreciate Tinubu’s leadership is to come to terms with the reality that transformative governance often demands sacrifice, and that the seeds of reform, though painful at planting, yield fruits of prosperity in due season.
Tinubu’s administration began with the courage to confront Nigeria’s most entrenched economic distortions. The removal of fuel subsidy, a policy long considered politically untouchable was a masterstroke of reform.
Though it triggered immediate discomfort, it liberated trillions of naira for investment in infrastructure, education, and healthcare.
Equally groundbreaking was the unification of Nigeria’s foreign exchange windows, a policy that restored transparency, boosted investor confidence, and repositioned Nigeria as a credible player in global finance. These reforms, coupled with fiscal discipline, have doubled government revenues, stabilized reserves, and halved inflation.
As the economist Joseph Schumpeter once observed, “Creative destruction is the essential fact about capitalism.” Tinubu’s reforms embody this principle: dismantling old inefficiencies to build a stronger, more resilient economy.
Nigeria’s security architecture has witnessed unprecedented revitalization. Under Tinubu’s watch, thousands of terrorists and bandits have been neutralized, while tens of thousands of insurgents have surrendered.
Kidnap victims have been rescued in record numbers, and oil theft has been curtailed through decisive action against illegal refineries.
These achievements are not mere statistics; they represent restored confidence in the state’s capacity to protect its citizens.
As Thomas Hobbes argued centuries ago, the legitimacy of government rests on its ability to guarantee security. Tinubu’s administration has reaffirmed that legitimacy.
Tinubu’s vision for Nigeria’s energy future is both pragmatic and futuristic.
By capturing 40% of Africa’s upstream petroleum investments and launching the Presidential CNG and Electric Vehicle Initiative, his administration has positioned Nigeria at the forefront of the continent’s energy transition.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has also demonstrated that innovation and space science are not luxuries but necessities for national progress and development. He has positioned Nigeria as a continental leader in the trilliondollar global space economy.
There is no gain-saying the fact that the numerous achievements recorded in the innovation, science and technology sector reflect a visionary commitment to making Nigeria not just a participant but a pacesetter in Africa’s technological renaissance.
Tinubu deserves commendation as one of the foremost African leaders who understands that the future belongs to nations that invest in knowledge, innovation, and space.
Infrastructure development has also accelerated, with roads, rail, and power projects expanding across the federation. States now execute billionnaira projects without borrowing, a testament to the fiscal space created by Tinubu’s reforms.
Education has been a cornerstone of Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
The establishment of the National Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has empowered over a million students with access to loans and upkeep allowances, democratizing opportunities for the next generation.
Diaspora engagement has also been prioritized, with Tinubu urging Nigerians abroad to channel capital, expertise, and technology into national development.
This global outreach reflects his belief that Nigeria’s greatness lies not only within its borders but also in the collective strength of its people worldwide.
It is undeniable that some policies have generated hardship.
Yet history teaches that the path to greatness is often paved with temporary discomfort. As Winston Churchill once declared, “To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.”
Tinubu’s reforms are not cosmetic; they are structural, designed to secure Nigeria’s longterm prosperity.
Unfortunately, misconceptions, deliberate campaigns of calumny, and entrenched political biases have clouded public appreciation of his achievements.
But posterity will vindicate his vision.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu stands today as one of Africa’s foremost leaders and one of Nigeria’s most outstanding presidents. His political sagacity, enviable track records, and audacity of reform will remain much talked about in Nigeria’s developmental history for decades to come.
We may not fully appreciate him now, but history will. His contributions will be remembered as the turning point when Nigeria chose courage over complacency, reform over stagnation, and hope over despair.
Let us appreciate Bola Ahmed Tinubu while he is still fully on stage. Let us recognize that the pains of today are the investments of tomorrow. Let us give our vote to him in the actualisation of his second term tenure, for the greatness of our country and the overall benefit of Nigerians.
As Psalm 126:5 reminds us: “They that sow in tears shall reap in joy.” Tinubu’s administration has sown the seeds of reform with courage; Nigeria will reap the harvest of prosperity with joy.
