The Vice Chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Prof. Tomola Obamuyi, has called for stronger presence of the operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and an enhanced intelligence gathering and information sharing among relevant stakeholders as part of measures to strengthen security within the University and its host communities.
The VC made the call in Akungba on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, when the State Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), Mr Sagir Samaila paid a courtesy visit to him.
Prof. Obamuyi described the visit as a significant opportunity to engage with one of the key pillars of security architecture, while expressing appreciation to the DSS for its efforts towards securing and the University community.
Citing the current security situation in the country, the VC appealed for strengthened effort and greater collaboration with the university management to prevent security threat and ensure prompt responses to emergency situations.
Prof. Obamuyi noted that timely and reliable information sharing and management would enable both the university management and the DSS to take prompt measures to prevent situations that could jeopardise the safety of members of the university community.
He added that there was a need to deploy more operatives to the university and its host communities to ensure tighter supervision and strengthen security efforts.
The VC said that the visit was particularly timely against the backdrop of prevailing security challenges in different parts of the country, stressing that institutions of learning could not afford to overlook the importance of proactive security measures.
Prof. Obamuyi assured the DSS that the University would continue to value and support collaborations aimed at enhancing the safety and security of the members of the University community.
He emphasised the need for more robust intelligence gathering and effective information sharing, noting that timely and accurate intelligence remained critical to identifying potential threats early and deploying appropriate preventive measures.
According to him, stronger collaboration among security agencies, the University Management and other relevant stakeholders would further enhance the capacity of the institution to respond effectively to emerging security concerns.
Earlier, the State Director of the DSS, Mr Sagir Samaila, explained that the purpose of the visit was primarily to congratulate Prof. Obamuyi on his assumption of office as Vice Chancellor and to wish him a successful tenure.
Mr Samaila assured the VC of the DSS’s readiness to support efforts that would promote peace and security within the University and its environs.
He noted that AAUA remained important to the Service because of its huge population of students and staff, adding that the DSS regarded itself as a stakeholder in the security of Akoko and Ondo State at large.
Mr Samaila further assured the University of the Service’s willingness to collaborate with the institution on security-related initiatives, stressing that sustained cooperation and information sharing would be essential to maintaining a safe and secure environment conducive to teaching, learning and research.
