
AFENIFERE LEADER, PA AYO ADEBANJO DIES AT 96
Chief Samuel Ayodele Adebanjo, a renowned nationalist, elder statesman, and advocate for justice, has died peacefully at the age of 96.
The family confirmed that Chief Adebanjo passed away in the early hours of Friday, February 14, 2025, at his residence in Lekki, Lagos.
The statement announcing his death was signed on behalf of the family by Mrs Ayotunde Atteh (née Ayo-Adebanjo), Mrs Adeola Azeez (née Ayo-Adebanjo), and Mr Obafemi Ayo-Adebanjo.
“He died peacefully this morning, Friday, February 14, 2025, at his Lekki, Lagos, Nigeria home at the age of 96,” the family’s statement read.
A distinguished lawyer, former Organising Secretary of the Action Group, and national leader of the Yoruba socio-cultural group Afenifere, Adebanjo dedicated his life to the struggle for truth, equity, and a better Nigeria.
He leaves behind his beloved 94-year-old wife, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, as well as his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
“We will forever cherish his commitment to fighting for truth, equity, and justice. His belief in and struggle for a truly independent and progressive Nigeria was unwavering, and this he pursued until his last breath,” the statement continued.
The family announced that consultations are underway with Adebanjo’s friends, associates, and various interest groups within and beyond Nigeria to plan a fitting funeral, saying details of the arrangements will be shared in due course.
It was further stated that a condolence register has been opened at his residence at 8, Ayo Adebanjo Close, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, as well as his country home in Isanya Ogbo, near Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.
