In another wave of defection hitting opposition political parties in Nigeria, three members of the House of Representatives on Thursday officially defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The opposition lawmakers who abandoned their former parties include one Reps member from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and two others from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
The lawmakers are Hon. Oluwole Oke, PDP, representing Obokon/Oriade Federal Constituency in Osun State; Hon. Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, NNPP, representing Rano/Bunkure/Kibiya Federal Constituency in Kano State, and Hon. Abdullahi Ibrahim Rogo, NNPP, representing Karaye/Rogo Federal Constituency in Kano State.
The lawmakers announced their defections during plenary at the National Assembly in Abuja.
Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, read their resignation letters to the chamber, confirming their switch to the APC.
One of the lawmakers, Oke, is currently serving his sixth term in the House, one of the longest-serving lawmakers in the chamber.
His defection comes just weeks after he hinted at parting ways with the PDP.
“I have consulted widely with my political associates, friends, and family members, and have come to the conclusion that it is time to move on,” Oke said in his letter, citing the need to realign with “political realities and aspirations of his constituents.”
The two Kano lawmakers, Rurum and Rogo, were also emphatic in their decisions.
Rurum, a former Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly and one-time governorship aspirant said his decision to join the APC was in the best interest of his people.
In a show of support, the APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, was present in the Chamber to witness the defections.
Ganduje, the immediate past governor of Kano State, was accompanied by the Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud Bunkure, and other party chieftains from Kano.
The development is viewed as a strategic move by the APC to bolster its numbers in the National Assembly amid speculation of future political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
However, the PDP and NNPP have not officially reacted to the defections.
Opposition parties, activists, and civil society organisations have condemned the recent wave of defections to the APC, arguing that it is a strategic move by the ruling party to transform Nigeria into a one-party state.Nigerian fashion
