The Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, on Sunday, July 20, 2025, joined President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, to commiserate with the government and people of Ogun on the passing of the Awùjalẹ̀ and Paramount Ruler of Ijẹbu Kingdom, Ọba Sikiru Kayọde Adetọna.
The high-powered condolence visit, led by President Tinubu, was received by Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, at the palace of the late monarch. The visit drew a host of dignitaries from across the country, all united in honouring the legacy of the late monarch.
The Awùjalẹ̀, who reigned for over six decades, was widely revered for his contributions to traditional leadership, socio-cultural development, and nation-building. Tributes have continued to pour in, with many describing him as a symbol of integrity, courage, and wisdom in Nigeria’s traditional institution.
Governor Aiyedatiwa joined his colleague governors and other sympathisers in paying respects to the late Ọba at Ijebu Ode, after a brief meeting at the residence of Governor Abiodun.
As part of the final rites, a special Fidau prayer was held in honour of the late monarch at the Otunba Dipo Dina International Stadium in Ijebu Ode. The solemn gathering attracted Islamic clerics, traditional leaders, political figures, and others who came to pay their last respects and pray for the peaceful repose of the late king’s soul.
Other governors present at the event included Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State, Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State, and Governor Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State. They also condoled with Governor Abiodun and the royal family.
Ọba Sikiru Adetọna, one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning monarchs, ascended the throne in 1960 and passed away recently at the age of 91.
