Towards ensuring that Ondo State take a leading role in the area of sports and youth development, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa since assuming office in December 2023 has set machinery in motion for the mass discovery of hidden sports talents at the grassroots.
He has equally demonstrated personal love by approving and releasing funds for performers to attend regional and national events.
Less than a year that Aiyedatiwa got into office as the State helmsman, his eagle eyes and requisite action have begun to yield positive results.
On November 14, 2024 pupils from Ondo State public primary schools were confirmed the best in sports following their remarkable showing at the maiden Basic Education School Sports (BESS) competition in the Federal Capital Territory.
Ondo State recorded a whopping 9 gold medal haul to beat second placed Akwa Ibom, hosts FCT, Lagos and others from all six geo-political zones.
The Sunshine State were decorated 31 times with 9 gold, 13 silver and 9 bronze medals while their closest challenger clinched 6 gold, 5 silver and 6 bronze medals.
Buoyed by the backing of the government, the young performers won medals in Ayo Olopon, Badminton, Table Tennis, Track and Field. They also triumphed in the intellectually inclined sports of Scrabble and Chess.
Governor Aiyedatiwa’s support lies not only in the objective vision he has for the toddlers but also to key into what the future holds for the State teenagers elsewhere.
At the last Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State, an Ondo State athlete emerged the fastest at the competition to add to Team Ondo’s medals.
In the same vein, Sunshine Stars U-19 FC have won 6 out of 7 ties to strengthen their aspiration for the maiden N-Youth League and expose their players for international recognition by European clubs.
Significantly, the former football player and administrator, Lucky Aiyedatiwa has a taste for success and a clear vision of glory which is gradually manifesting and being enjoyed in Ondo State.
