BIBLE DIDN’T FORBID WOMEN’S TROUSERS, BISHOP BACKS ABEL DAMINA
The International Secretary of the Ecumenical Synods of Bishops, Archbishops, Apostles, and Senior Clergy in London, Archbishop Osazee Williams, has backed Nigerian preacher, Dr Abel Damina, over his recent comments on women’s trousers and the misinterpretation of Deuteronomy 22:5.
Damina, during a sermon in a viral video, addressed the long-held belief that the Bible forbade women from wearing trousers.
In the message, Damina explained that Deuteronomy 22:5 never mentioned trousers or skirts, stating that the Bible verse had been misused over time due to religious assumptions.
According to him, the text was aimed at discouraging crossdressing and not prescribing specific gendered clothing styles.
He stressed that interpreting any Bible verse outside its cultural and scriptural context could lead to confusion and religious manipulation.
Commenting on the sermon, Williams, in an interview with Sunday PUNCH, called for a deeper understanding of scripture beyond surface reading.
He said people should not merely read the Bible but allow it to interpret itself within proper context.
Using examples from global cultures, Williams explained that men in Scotland wear skirts as official attire and in Nigeria, some men from Urhobo and other ethnic groups traditionally wear wrappers as well.
He stated that clothing is culturally defined and not inherently sinful.
The bishop added that trousers could even be more suitable for women, especially in terms of comfort and mobility, and that the emphasis should be on modesty and decency.
“In fact, it is the woman that should wear trouser more because it gives them more flexibility and comfortability,” he stated.
Williams pointed out that dressing should not be used to judge someone’s morality, just as he encouraged women to dress responsibly and avoid suggestive appearances that could lead to misconceptions.
“Like I tell my congregation, when you arrive in a city, how will you identify a prostitute, is it not based on how they dressed and paint their face and other things? But when you are not a prostitute but dressed like them, you are most likely to be mistaken for one. So, dress responsibly, wear a trouser suit looking good and smart.”
