CIVIL RIGHTS ACTIVIST MARTIN-MARY FALANA CONDEMNS VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN IN POLITICS
A Civil Rights Activist, Martin-Mary Falana has condemned violence against women in politics, saying it is a threat to democracy.
This was contained in a statement personally signed by him and made available to newsmen in Akure.
In his words, “I strongly condemn the brutal assault of women participating in political activities by thugs and agents of intimidation”.
“What we are witnessing is not merely misconduct, it is an organised attempt to silence women and push them out of spaces they have every legal and moral right to occupy”.
“Democracy cannot exist where fear replaces freedom. When women are beaten for speaking, organising, contesting, or supporting candidates, the electoral process stops being representative and becomes coercive”.
“A political system that intimidates women is not protecting democracy; it is dismantling it”.
“As a civil rights activist and unapologetic feminist, I insist that political participation must never come at the cost of personal safety. Women are not visitors in governance, they are citizens, stakeholders, voters, leaders, and nation builders”.
“Violence against women is violence against democratic choice itself”.
“I call on Security agencies to urgently investigate, arrest, and prosecute both perpetrators and sponsors of political violence”.
“Political parties to publicly reject thuggery and sanction any member who enables or funds it”.
“Electoral authorities to provide visible and enforceable protection for women in political spaces”.
“Community and religious leaders to actively condemn violence and promote peaceful engagement”.
“We must never normalise brutality as a campaign strategy. Political competition must be decided by ideas and ballots, not fists and weapons”.
“I stand in solidarity with every woman who has been assaulted, threatened, or silenced for daring to participate in public life. Their courage is not a crime, and their voices will not be erased”.
