EKITI MONARCH BANS MIDDLEMEN ACTIVITIES IN MARKETS
***Pegs prices of pepper portions at between 50 naira and 200 naira while a ‘kongo’ of gaari should not be more than 900 naira
The Alara of Aramoko-Ekiti in Ekiti State, Oba Adegoke Olu Adeyemi has announced a ban on activities of middlemen in all markets across the ancient town.
The traditional ruler’s message was passed across to market women and traders in the main market by one of his Chiefs.
The traditional authority expressed concern that activities of the middlemen who demand commissions populary known as ‘laada’ on the produce brought to the market has contributed more to high cost of food items in the town.
The Alara warned that anyone who goes against the instructions would be dealt with accordingly.
Some of the instructions passed across to market women and traders include the pegging of prices of a portion of pepper to between 50 naira and 200 naira, warning that no portion should cost 500 naira in the market.
It was also announced that a ‘kongo’ of gaari should not be more than 900 naira.
Some members of the public who reacted to this development called on other traditional rulers in both Ondo and Ekiti States to emulate the Alara of Aramoko-Ekiti, Oba Adegoke Olu Adeyemi to reduce the hardship being faced by the people.
Some even alleged that many of the traditional rulers collect rebate from many of the market women associations.
This , they said would go a long way in stemming the tide of high cost of food items in the society.
It would be remembered that the Ooni of Ile-Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi pioneered same process to safeguard the interest of the consumers , especially at this period that many are finding it difficult to feed their families.
