GUNMEN KIDNAP PETROAN BoT CHAIRMAN KILL DRIVER, OTHER CO-TRAVELER
The Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Petroleum Retailers Outlet Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN), Obasi Lawson, has been kidnapped by armed assailants in the Azumini area of Abia State.
The Abia State Police Command confirmed the abduction in a statement released on Friday by its spokesperson, Maureen Chinaka.
According to the statement, the incident occurred around 7 p.m. on March 4, 2025.
Chinaka explained that Lawson’s convoy was attacked by gunmen in a dark blue Sienna while traveling through Azumini Ndoki, in the Ukwa East Local Government Area, on his way to Port Harcourt.
“While the officers were repelling the attack, another set of gunmen forcefully took Chief Lawson, ordered him into their vehicle, and took him to an unknown destination, leaving his driver and one other person dead,” she said.
Following the incident, Abia State Commissioner of Police, CP Danladi Isa, visited the scene with the Deputy Commissioner of Operations and other security officials. He urged the public to stay calm and remain alert.
In response, security forces have intensified patrols and deployed tactical units to search for the attackers and secure Lawson’s release.
The police have also appealed to residents to report anyone with gunshot wounds or sightings of the dark blue Sienna to the nearest police station or contact the Command’s emergency lines.
