GUNMEN KILL HEALTH WORKER NEAR AKURE AIRPORT
… Killing follows series of incidents in the area including recent murder of five farmers and kidnappings such as abduction of FECA students
A 46-year-old private health worker, Akinola Oyabiyi, has been shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Akure, the Ondo State capital.
The tragic incident occurred around 8pm on Tuesday in the Akure Airport area of Akure North Local Government Area.
Oyabiyi, a father of four, was reportedly driving home when he encountered the gunmen suspected to be kidnappers.
According to a family source who spoke under the condition of anonymity, he was shot before he could attempt to escape from his vehicle.
This latest killing follows a series of violent incidents in the Akure Airport area, including the recent murder of five farmers and multiple kidnappings, such as the abduction of students of the Federal College of Agriculture (FECA), Akure working in a farm to fulfil their mandatory Industrial Training (IT) programme.
The death of Oyabiyi has heightened fears among Akure residents, many of whom now live in constant apprehension and insecurity.
Local communities are calling for urgent intervention to address the escalating violence in the area.
Reacting to the incident, the Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, assured the public that the police are investigating the case.
“We are on it,” she stated, promising that efforts are underway to track down the perpetrators and restore security in the area.
