HOW EKITI BIODIVERSITY SURVEY PROJECT CELEBRATED CITIZEN SCIENCE AND CONSERVATION IN IKERE-EKITI
The Ekiti Biodiversity Survey Project recently marked a significant milestone with a prize presentation ceremony held at the palace of the Ogoga of Ikere-Ekiti.
The event attracted the highest number of observations on the iNaturalist app, a platform dedicated to promoting biodiversity in Ekiti State.
The Ogoga of Ikere-Ekiti, HRM Oba Samuel Adejinmi Adu presented the publication “The Last Ice” as a prize, while Mr. Olatilu Oluwabunmi, Co-Founder of Green to Abundant Development & Empowerment Foundation (GADEF), presented a branded t-shirt to the winner, Mr. Ajayi Shadrach a.k.a Akata who made the highest number of observations on the iNaturalist platform for Ikere Community.
The event also witnessed Dr. Babajide Agboola the Project Initiator, presented over 20 indigenous tree seedlings donated by Green to Abundant Development & Empowerment Foundation (GADEF) to be planted in the Olosunta community protected area, a gesture aimed at promoting reforestation and conservation efforts.

HRM Oba Samuel Adejinmi Adu, the Ogoga of Ikere-Ekiti and the Ogoga in council expressed their appreciation for the project’s efforts in promoting biodiversity and conservation, highlighting the significance of community involvement, and the importance of citizen science education as an effort in promoting biodiversity in our immediate environment as a tool for deforestation and conservation.
The traditional authority was impressed with the initiator as olosunta is part of the 10 community-protected forests approved by Ekiti State government.
The event underscored the need for collective action in protecting the environment as Dr. Agboola emphasized that community support fuels the movement, noting that the task of making impact is a collective responsibility.
The Ogoga of Ikere-Ekiti’s recognition of citizen-science education as a tool for deforestation and conservation highlights the project’s potential for positive change.
The Ekiti Biodiversity Survey Project aims to continue promoting conservation and biodiversity through citizen science initiatives. By engaging communities and fostering a culture of conservation, the project strives to create a more developed and prosperous society for future generations.
