Welcome to Carr Street, Off Oba Adesida Road in Akure the Ondo State Capital, South-West Nigeria.
The street is also known as Alakunre Street. When the name Carr Street is mentioned, one would conclude that a spare part is required, considering the large concentration of Igbo Traders who deal in spare parts in the area.
However, in this same Carr Street is a pounded yam base tagged “Ibile Pounded Yam Joint” run and owned by Mama Ruth Omolara who said she has been into pounded yam business when she was just about 30 years old in 1976.
Mama Omolara who will be 79 years old in November, 2025 said she started the business at her father’s house near Arakale Road in the state capital.
Naija Parrots gathered that her food center then was an attraction for public people, especially politicians and broadcasters, more so that Ondo State Broadcasting Corporation just birthed in the then newly created state.
“Odo mi gan an ni won ti wa n wo awon Ige Jongbo, Emman Adumashi, etc, E wa wo awon to n soro lori radio”, Mama Omolara stressed.
Meaning, people were coming to her canteen then to see physically, radio presenters like Ige Jongbo, Emman Adumashi,etc.
Now that Mama operates at Carr Street, the joint is fast becoming a tourist attraction as pounded yam is served even before 7.00am from monday to saturday with personalities from all sectors marking register to justify the Yoruba adage that “Onje lore awo”, Food is essential to the body system.
Naija Parrots was surprised to come across elderly people who include community leaders, Public Servants, Politicians, etc making their choices.
Varieties available and irresistible at Ibile Pounded Yam joint include “Ponmo Kika, Orun Adiye (Chicken Neck), Itan Adiye(Chicken Lap), Ogufe(Goat Meat), Okuru(Bush Meat), etc.
When next you are in Akure the Ondo State Capital, remember to visit Ibile Pounded Yam joint even before 7.00am for an experience you will be glad you witnessed.

on your right.
