GIRLS-TO-WOMEN RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT CENTRE MENTORS BOYS ON SELF VALUES, SPORT DEVT
…As CEO Olamide Falana emphasises need to raise responsible boys who will eventually become responsible adults
In an effort to build and equip young boys to live right and overcome challenges associated with adolescent, a Non Governmental Organization, Girls to Women Research and Development Centre (G2W) on Friday, 16th May, 2025 organized a workshop with attendance of 5 different secondary schools in Akure to mark this year’s International Day of the Boy-Child.
Speaking on the essence of the program, the CEO, G2W, Chief Mrs. Olamide Falana, the immediate past Special Adviser to Ondo State Governor on Gender Matters said there is a rising need to
raise responsible boys who will eventually become responsible adults tomorrow.
Exploring the theme of the celebration: “Building Self Esteem of Boys: Standup, Be Heard, Be Seen”, Hon. Falana said men play critical roles in the society and catching them young to teach them right is key.
While noting that all the guest speakers were carefully selected as they are role models and men who have excelled in their own career, she urged the participants to pay particular attention and learn as they guide them through positive mentorship.
She also charged them to cascade the knowledge to other boys in their schools and respective communities as the goal is to reposition their mind to understand their roles and purpose in life.
In his keynote address, the Deputy Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olayide Adelami, mni, ably represented by Dr. Ademola Taofeek Adewale underscored the fact that there is reward for every action.
Drawing from his personal experience, Dr. Adewale traced his journey so far, inspiring the young mind to know what they want to become in life and to give it all their best shot.
He further stressed that there is nothing like self esteem if it is not laced with focus.
Also speaking, Mr. Adeolu Gboyega, one of the guest speakers took time to identify right mentors for right development.
He charged the young minds most especially those from dysfunctional settings to look beyond their immediate homes to source mentors that will help them reach their goals in life.
On identifying adolescent challenges and overcoming them, Pastor Sam Neye spoke about depression, low self esteem, addiction to drugs, pornography and sex.
He also highlighted ways to overcome them which included defining self values and building high self esteem among others
The event also featured a session where panelist spoke about gender orientation as a result of low self esteem and potential dangers of unrestricted access of young people to ICT in the digital space among others.
Panelists include Hon Tomide Akinribido SSA ro Governor on ICT, Amb Orioye Gbayisemore SSA in youth and job creation , Mr Gbenga Adene convener HOWGA, Mr Seun Betiku Chairman PUBS and Pastor Sam Neye while it was anchored by George Oguntimehin
The students were later divided into groups to enjoy unlimited sporting activities and training from sport experts.
