NDG Day 2: Ebere Nwoke, Naomi Alexander, Others Shine in Boxing Quarter-Finals
Boxers delivered thrilling performances on Day 2 of the boxing event at the ongoing Niger Delta Games, with several athletes displaying determination and skill as they battled for places in the semi-finals.
The quarter-final bouts reflected the high level of competition at the games, which feature athletes from the nine Niger Delta states competing in multiple sports at venues across Benin City, with the event hosted by Edo State.
In the men’s 70kg category Nwoko Ebere Tehundjo of Imo State edged past Goddy Godstime of Delta State by split decision, following a closely contested bout in which both fighters showed impressive resilience and technique.
Another exciting fight came in the men’s 60kg bout where Pender Victorious of Delta State defeated Kalu Abel Ebubechi of Abia State after a spirited contest, securing progression to the next round.
In the women’s 58kg contest, Sarah Victor of Bayelsa State emerged victorious against Victoria Sunday Ekpo of Cross River State after both athletes gave a strong account of themselves in the ring.
The women’s 60kg division also produced exciting action as Naomi Alexander of Akwa Ibom State defeated Somtochukwu Njoku of Abia State, booking a place in the semi-finals with a confident performance.
Also recording victory in the same category was Okolo Favour of Edo State, who overcame Abai Opeyemi Deborah of Ondo State after a determined effort.
Meanwhile, Blessed Joseph of Bayelsa State progressed to the next round via walkover against Alanonu Chiamara Esther of Imo State, while Obani Onhyenatuluchi of Rivers State also advanced through a walkover against Okon Ekubose Cornelius of Cross River State.
