Following the spate of insecurity across Nigeria, a new para-military organisation has been established to complement the efforts of the existing security agencies in the country.
The Safety and Protection Officers Nigeria(SPON) was put in place to carry out safety assistance duties and roles that would create a new orientation in terms of civil defence efforts.
The National Director of SPON in the country, Pastor(Dr.) Gideon Akinwumi who spoke with newsmen shortly after a meeting with officers of the organization in a Akure the Ondo State capital said they are prepared to employ non-violent legal means to fight against social vices in the society.
According to him, areas of interest and targets of SPON include gender violence, domestic violence, rape, battery and assault as well as human and child trafficking.
Dr. Akinwumi stressed that Safety and Protection Officers Nigeria would also fight against child labour, land grabbing, victimization of female students as well as landlords and tenants.
The National Coordinator emphasized that structures and processes have been put in place to educate the masses on the need to follow safety procedures at all times while channels of reporting crime suspects to law enforcement agencies have been created.
Similarly, the Ondo State coordinator of the Safety and Protection Officers Nigeria (SPON), Pastor Isaac Osewa added that officers have been equipped with the required knowledge to assist in the area of traffic control, enforcement of sanitation rules and regulations as well as provision of assistance to road accident victims
