ODSG FROWNS AT INDUSTRIES FAILURE TO REPLACE HARVESTED TREES
The Ondo State Government has frowned at the rate of non-compliance with regulations guiding wood harvesting and replacement by wood-based industries and sawmill operators in the state.
The government will not condone the act of failing to regenerate harvested trees by wood processing factory owners.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, (Forestry/Produce sub-sector of the Ministry, Chief Segun Odusanya, made this statement during unscheduled visit to some wood-based industries in the southern part of the state. According to Chief Odusanya, it will not be business as usual; all stakeholders must abide by the laws governing wood felling and replacement.
The Permanent Secretary emphasized that the state government, through the forestry sub-sector of the Ministry, is willing to support companies that show interest to plant trees to replace harvested ones.
He stressed that harvesting trees for commercial and other purposes without reforestation would lead to the depletion of raw materials, ultimately affecting their businesses.
Chief Odusanya urged the industries to start planting trees to replace the harvested ones for the benefit of all.
According to Sola Omoboyowa, Head Media and Public Relations, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the wood-based factories visited included Dele Wood in Omotosho, JHX in Omotosho, and Dasamel in Ore.
