ODSG TO RESTORE POWER TO UNIMEDTH, PLANS ALTERNATIVE ENERGY SOURCE
In a renewed effort to ensure stable electricity supply to the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital (UNIMEDTH) Ondo, the State Government has commenced rehabilitation work on the institution’s 2.5MVA injection substation. The move is part of a broader plan to not only reconnect UNIMEDTH to the national grid but also establish a long-term renewable energy source for self-sustainability.
Leading a high-level inspection visit to the site, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Power and Commissioner-Designate, Engr. (Dr.) Johnson Alabi, confirmed that Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa has approved over ₦50 million for the ongoing repairs. He was accompanied by senior officials, including the State Coordinator of OSERB, Engr. Stephen Bolawole; General Manager of OSEB, Engr. Akindolani Ogunmakinwa; and Acting MD of OSPCL, Engr. Olumayowa Ajumobi.
Dr. Alabi expressed satisfaction with the rehabilitation progress, noting that the 2.5MVA transformer has been fixed and the faulty Ring Main Unit (RMU) replaced. The contractor, Power Grid, disclosed that they are awaiting outage clearance from BEDC to complete the reconnection.
Beyond short-term restoration, the government is also focusing on energy efficiency and sustainability.
“The ultimate goal is to reduce power costs through proper energy management and achieve uninterrupted supply via renewable energy,” Dr. Alabi stated.
In addition, the delegation inspected ongoing electricity infrastructure projects in Irele, Ajagba, and Ese-Odo LGAs, where the Ondo State Power Company (OSPC) is currently rehabilitating 2 x 7.5MVA and 1 x 7.5MVA injection stations. These areas have reportedly been without power for over 16 years.
Commending the interventions by NDPHC and NDDC, Dr. Alabi pledged deeper collaboration to commercialize and optimize power assets across the state.
According to the Media Officer to the Special Adviser, Debbie Funmilayo, Dr. Alabi and his team also visited the Ahaba of Ajagba where they solicited the support of the monarch at the Government’s efforts to restore power to the area.
“Our vision is clean, stable, and inclusive energy. We are encouraging multiple investors in the electricity market to ensure competition, accountability, and fast service delivery,” he said, while urging contractors to expedite work, in line with the Governor’s directive for timely completion.
