ONDO CATHOLIC ORGANISATION HOLDS FOOD FAIR AS OLAMIDE FALANA COMMENDS PROGRAMME
Amidst the wave of threatening food crises and economic hardship, not peculiar to Ondo State but in the nation at large, the Populorum Progressio Catholic Economics under the umbrella of the Catholic Diocese of Ondo, have organized a Food Fair to address the effects of high food costs in the society.
The Food Fair which was tagged Catholic Market with the theme: “Ondo Diocesan Food Fair and Caterers’ Exhibition” was held at the Sacred Heart Cathedral Hall, Akure.
Giving her remarks at the Fair, the Special Adviser on Gender Matters, Chief Olamide Falana said it was a high degree of intervention considering the present situation of food affordability.
“This is a unique and commendable effort by the church who has deemed it fit to make it easy for its members to have access to food items at subsidized rates; We know the current cost of food items obtainable at the market so this goes beyond making food items available but rather, it is more substantially a conscious effort to show love and attention to people in these difficult times, no matter how little people are being comforted”.
Speaking earlier, the administrator of the Cathedral, Rev. Father Stephen Omokoba said the church has the obligation to reach out to people in need beyond spiritual matters.
“This is our own way of contributing our quota to alleviate the current hardship in town and we are glad to see both the retailers of the farm products as well as the consumers benefit from the the food fair”.
Team coordinator of the Populorum Progressio Catholic Economics, Dr. Okpakpor Esther, explained that the essence of the Food Fair was to provide subsidized food items to Catholic families thereby providing succor considering the situation of the economy. “We hope more traders would key into the program in the coming phases by disseminating the information so more food supplies would be made available for purchase”.
The various food products sold at the fair were; rice, beans, garri, palmoil, tomatoes, peppers, vegetables amongst others, all at affordable costs compared with the current market prices.
According to the Media Officer in the Office of Gender Matters, Highlight of the the Food Fair was the giveaway financial token by the Special Adviser to ten lucky winners for purchase of food items at the fair.
