ONDO ENERGY COMMISSIONER ALABI CALLS FOR CALM OVER ALLEGED BEDC TARIFF HIKE
The attention of the Ondo State Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Engr. (Dr.) Johnson Alabi, has been drawn to reports circulating on certain news platforms alleging that the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) has secretly implemented a tariff hike.
Reacting to the development in his office, the Commissioner said, “The story is not true; What happened is the case of people who were recently migrated from lower bands to Band A, which is invariably costlier.
He urged residents to remain calm and disregard the misleading information, noting that the measures being implemented are necessary adjustments made in the overall interest of the citizenry.
Engr. Alabi explained that the recent adjustments were not designed to cause discomfort, rather stemmed from the increased supply of cleaner and more reliable electricity currently being delivered across the state to improve citizens’ welfare.
“Without a doubt, there has been a notable improvement in electricity supply across the metropolis. It is therefore important to understand that the adjustment aims to ensure fairness and equity among consumers. Residents who enjoy longer hours of supply on Band A are charged differently from those on Bands B, C, or D with lesser supply hours,” he stated.
According to a statement signed by the Information Officer in the ministry, Debbie Funmilayo, the Commissioner further clarified the current tariff structure as approved by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC):
Band A: 20–24 hours supply — ₦209.5 per kWh
Band B: 16 hours supply — ₦64.7 per kWh
Band C: 6–10 hours supply — ₦48.53–₦52 per kWh
Band D: Lower than 6 hours supply — ₦42 per kWh
He assured residents that the Ondo State Government remains committed to working closely with Benin Electricity Ondo Limited (BEOL) to sustain the ongoing improvements in electricity supply and ensure transparency in all processes.
Engr. Alabi also appealed to residents to adopt efficient energy management practices in their homes to reduce costs and promote sustainability.
“We must all actively seek ways to consume less energy. Turn off appliances when not in use, and support the government’s efforts toward achieving a stable and sustainable power system,” he advised.
The Commissioner reaffirmed that the Aiyedatiwa-led administration will continue to prioritize policies and initiatives that enhance access to affordable, reliable, and clean energy across Ondo State.
