Following a confusion that trailed the incident, the Ondo State Police Command has dismissed a report that its men allegedly involved in the killing of three men at Kajola, declaring that the victims died in an accident.
In a Press Statement, the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Odunlami Funmilayo, said on Saturday, 23rd of April, 2022, at about 11:00PM, there was a Fatal Motor/ Motorcycle accident at Kajola Area along Ijebu Ode/Ore Expressway, between a motorcyclist carrying two passengers and had a head on collision with a hit and run vehicle, after the motorcyclist took a one way which led to their death.
There was a Pandemonium at Kajola Community in Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State at the weekend as youths in their hundreds mobilized to burn a police station in the area over alleged police recklessness, leading to the death of three persons including a community chief.
The angry mob, thronged the Police Divisional Headquarters in Kajola for allegedly killing their indigenes at the police checkpoints in the area, along Lagos/Benin Expressway on Saturday.
They dumped the three corpses at the Police Divisional Headquarters, Kajola, chanting series of protest songs to register their grievances and declared that they didn’t want police in the community again.
The victims, David Olowofeyekun, Gbenga Abayomi and Kola Akinduro, who was the Head of Korede Village were on a motorcycle and heading home from their farms.
However in the Press Statement, the Police spokesperson said, “the attention of the Ondo State Police Command has been drawn to various publications alleging that Policemen attached to Kajola Division killed three (3) people.
“This is to set the record straight in order to clear the misinformation this story may paint in the heart of citizens as the allegation is not only false but misleading.
“The fact of the issue was that on Saturday, 23rd of April, 2022, at about 11:00PM, there was a Fatal Motor/ Motorcycle accident at Kajola Area along Ijebu Ode/Ore Express way, between a motorcyclist carrying two (2) pillions and a hit and run vehicle, the motorcyclist took a one way and had a head on collision with a hit and run vehicle which led to the death of the three (3) men on the motorcycle.
“It was however, surprising that the youths of the community mobilized and carried the bodies of the deceased to the Station accusing the Police of complicity in the Accident.
“The Commissioner of Police, CP Oyeyemi Adesoye Oyediran, psc, fsi, had visited the scene and also condoled with the Family and people of the community while he has ordered that thorough investigation be carried out to find out if there is any complicity on the part of the Police in the accident,” the PPRO said.
