
ONDO MOVES TO TAKE OVER POWER DISTRIBUTION FROM BENIN ELECTRICITY ONDO LTD
In a bold step aimed at addressing persistent power supply challenges, the Ondo State Government has declared its intention to take over electricity distribution within the state from the current electricity distribution company (DisCo), BEDC/BEOL.
The announcement was made during a high-level meeting between the government and BEDC management.
Speaking at the meeting, the Special Adviser on Power to the Governor, Engr. (Dr.) Johnson Alabi, conveyed the State Government’s dissatisfaction with the poor electricity supply experienced across the state. He emphasized the Governor’s resolve to bring reliable and affordable power to the people through the Ondo State Power Company.
> “Power is a critical utility that drives the economy. We cannot fold our arms while our people suffer from epileptic supply. It is time to take power to the doorsteps of our citizens,” Dr. Alabi said, reiterating Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa’s commitment to fulfilling his promise of energy reform.
In response, the Chief Commercial Officer of BEDC, Mr. Akin Ogunleye, who represented the Acting Managing Director, acknowledged the issues raised and welcomed the government’s intervention.
The meeting concluded with both parties signing a communique to form a joint committee within one week to oversee the transition plan.
The committee is expected to submit its report by June 30, 2025.
Key stakeholders in attendance included CEOs from EnerixOne, Advanced Power, and Anyigba, as well as community leader Pa Ademola Ijabiyi.
Government officials present included the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Alh. Bode Yusuf, and the Acting MD of the Ondo State Power Company, Engr. Olumayowa Ajumobi, among others.
According to a statement signed by the Press Officer to the Special Adviser to Governor Aiyedatiwa on Power, this marks the beginning of a significant shift toward energy independence for Ondo State.
