ONDO PARTNERS NERC, NISO AND TCN TO BOOST POWER SUPPLY
As part of the unrelenting efforts of the State government to reach underserved and unserved areas towards an improved power supply, the Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Engr. (Dr.) Johnson Alabi, has held a high-level meeting with the top management team of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, Nigerian Independent System Operator and the Transmission Company of Nigeria.
According to the Commissioner, the meeting which held in Abuja, was an offshoot of a Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) Substation project at Owode, Akure which has almost become moribund.
Engr. Alabi who commended the team for their proactive response to hold discussions with the State, recalled how instrumental they were to the State’s decentralization process saying, that it gave rise to Ondo state gaining it’s full regulatory rights to operate.
He emphasized the prevalent constraint of power supply the State is faced with, “According to statistics, Ondo State is getting less than 30 Megawatts, meanwhile there is an urgent need to be able to supply as much as 700 megawatts; This has triggered the need for the Ondo State Government to intervene in completing the project”.
Engr. Alabi, reiterating government’s commitment, said the state is now set to assist TCN in the completion of the Owode 330/132/33 KVA substation, by way of supporting to complete the project so that power distribution can rapidly be sourced from there as that would be the game changer in Electricity supply in the state.
In his remark, the Commission’s Vice Chairman, Musiliu Oseni, said the meeting was necessary to seek ways to revive the ongoing protracted project between the Commission and the State government.
While he expressed regrets that the project had been delayed for a long period of time, he opined that the meeting would yield fruitful outcomes, going forward.
The Executive Director NISO, Engr. Shehu Aliyu, outlined the company’s efforts in the projections and plans to get the substation connected since 2023. He noted that Right of Ways has been another impending factor. But believes it would be resolved and plans were underway to seal agreements with the contractors while the necessary documentation would be processed to the Bureau of Public ProcurementBPP)and the Federal Executive Council (FEC), respectively for approval.
He commended the State government for revisiting the project and declared willingness to partner with them, saying that the project would be of high advantage to the State.
According to a statement signed by the Information Officer in the Ministry, Debbie Funmilayo, It was agreed that Ondo state Government would officially request for the detailed information regarding the project and whatever would be required to complete it.
