Professor Wole Soyinka is a living literary legend, born on July 13, 1934, in Aké, Abeokuta, Nigeria.
He is a renowned Nigerian writer, poet, and playwright who has made significant contributions to African literature.
Soyinka has written extensively on various genres, including plays, novels, poems, and essays, exploring African art and worldviews while addressing sociopolitical issues. He is the first African and Black writer to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1986.
Throughout his career, he has been recognized for his work, including the Europe Theater Prize’s “Special Prize” in 2017.Soyinka continues to be an influential figure in the literary world, celebrated for his unique blend of traditional African and Western influences in his writing.
Renowned people in Nigeria Christian mission history like Rev.Daniel Olubi(1830-1912),the first Anglican church missioner of Ibadan,Likoye Kuti(1820-1863),a native of Orile Igbein in the Egba forest who escaped from slave ship and trekked from present day Liberia to Abeokuta,he was the father of Rev Josiah Jesse Ransome -Kuti,(1855-1930) a first class -Yoruba hymnologist, clergyman and patriarch of the Ransome -Kuti Family of Abeokuta, Oba Samuel Akinsanya(1898-1985),the Odemo of Isara, political activist and one of the founding fathers of Nigeria was a cousin of Samuel Ayodele Soyinka, Wole Soyinka’s own father.
The four children of the renowned clergy and educationist,Rev.Israel Oludotun Ransome-Kuti (1891-1955) and iconic Feminist and Women Rights Campaigner,Mrs.Funmilayo Ransome – Kuti(1900-1978); Dolupo, Olikoye,Fela and Beko Ransome -Kuti were famous cousins of Wole Soyinka through his maternal lineage.
