OVER 1,000 ONDO RESIDENTS BENEFIT FROM GMT’S FREE MEDICAL OUTREACH
More than 1,000 residents of Ondo State on Thursday received free healthcare services through a medical outreach programme organised by the Grassroots Mobilisation for Tinubu (GMT), a political support group working to advance the policies and vision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The programme, tagged Jigi Asiwaju, took place at the Methodist Primary School in Okitipupa, headquarters of Okitipupa Local Government Area.
It was declared open by the Jegun of Idepe-Okitipupa, Oba Michael Adetoye Obatuga, who was accompanied by members of his Council of Chiefs to the event.
The outreach focused on providing eye care and other basic health services for residents, especially the elderly and vulnerable groups.
During the exercise, participants benefitted from free eye tests, consultations, treatment for common ailments, blood pressure checks, distribution of essential drugs and the donation of free eyeglasses.
Speaking at the event, the State Director-General of GMT, Saka Yusuf-Ogunleye, explained that the programme was designed to complement President Tinubu’s developmental efforts by bringing direct impact to the grassroots.
He noted that the initiative was not only about medical intervention but also about strengthening community trust in government policies.
“President Tinubu has been doing well since assuming office and we feel the need to support his vision by touching lives at the grassroots level. This is why GMT launched the Jigi Asiwaju outreach.
“We have already covered Ondo Central, now we are in Ondo South and the next stop will be Ondo North. Our goal is to ensure no community is left out of this medical intervention.
“Although the medical programme is being organised by the state chapter of GMT but it is powered by the Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo. The group appreciates his unwavering support,” Yusuf-Ogunleye said.
The DG assured that the group would continue to expand the outreach to rural communities across the state, where access to healthcare facilities remains a challenge.
Several beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the gesture.
Mrs. Felicia Oguntola, one of the recipients of free eyeglasses, said the support came at the right time.
“I have been struggling with my eyesight for years but could not afford proper glasses. Today, I received free eye tests and glasses. This will really help me in my daily activities,” she said.
Another beneficiary, Mr. Pamilerin Ayeku, who received a free hypertension test and medication, commended the organisers for bringing healthcare closer to the people.
Ayeku said: “Many of us in rural areas find it difficult to go to hospitals, either because of distance or financial constraints. This programme has lifted a big burden off us and I thank GMT for remembering the grassroots.”
The outreach was well attended by community leaders, political supporters and healthcare volunteers, who worked together to ensure the smooth delivery of services.
