SAND MINERS MUST COMPLY WITH ₦1,000 DAILY LEVY PAYMENT – ONDO GOVERNMENT
The Ondo State Government has directed members of the Association of Sand Miners in the state to begin immediate compliance with the payment of a ₦1,000 daily development levy on their operations.
The directive was issued by the Honourable Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Engr. (Dr.) Johnson Jaiyeola Alabi, during a meeting held in his office with the state executive members of the Union of Tipper and Quarry Employers of Nigeria (UTQEN), Laterite Suppliers, and Sand and Quarry Suppliers of Nigeria.
In his remarks, Engr. Alabi noted that the discussion on compliance with the government’s directive was long overdue, considering the series of engagements held with the association in the past. He emphasized that delays in implementing the levy could slow down the state’s developmental efforts and urged the association to demonstrate cooperation by adhering promptly to the decision.
The Commissioner also cautioned the association against undermining the authority of the government, stressing that the Aiyedatiwa-led administration is not introducing the levy to make life difficult for operators but to create a framework that delivers mutual benefits for both the state and industry players.
Engr. Alabi further directed the immediate commencement of the ₦1,000 daily levy and announced that a ₦1,000 per trip levy will take effect from November 1, 2025.
“Let us begin implementation immediately. If there are any concerns or grievances, please register them officially so that they can be communicated to Mr. Governor,” he stated.
Responding, the President of the Association, Engr. Wale Adebisi, expressed appreciation to the Commissioner for his patience and understanding, explaining that the delay in implementation stemmed from internal challenges and ongoing deliberations among stakeholders.
He assured the Commissioner of the association’s willingness to comply with the directive but requested time to brief members and provide prompt feedback, noting that decisions within the sector involve multiple players including drivers, quarry operators, suppliers, tipper owners, and loaders, and cannot be made unilaterally.
According to a statement signed by the Information Officer in the Ministry, Debbie Funmilayo, present at the meeting were the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Alhaji Olabode Yusuf; Director of Mineral Resources, Mr. Abiodun Jones; Deputy Director of Mineral Resources, Engr. Bidemi Oladapo; quarry consultants, and other members of the association.
