15 YEARS AFTER: THE NIGERIAN PROJECT EXTOLS VIRTUES OF FORMER FIRST LADY, MARYAM BABANGIDA
The Nigerian Project has reflected on the virtues of a former first Lady in Nigeria, Late Dr.(Mrs) Maryam Babangida who the project said created a new orientation for women in the country, especially in the rural areas.
The National Convener of the Project, Chief Reagan Ufomba in a statement to commemorate the 15th memorial anniversary of her departure described the former First Lady as a pathfinder for emancipation of women in Nigeria.
Chief Ufomba said the woman who was credited to have created the office of the First Lady occupied a significant place in the hearts of many Nigerians as her life was marked by grace, charisma and an unwavering commitment to social causes.
The National Convener emphasised that Dr.(Mrs) Maryam Ibrahim Babangida was a trailblazer, philanthropist, and advocate for women’s rights and also became a symbol of sophistication, through her immense qualities of care and compassion for the less privileged in society.
According to Ufomba, her establishment of the famous “Better Life for Rural Women Programme”, led to revolution that redefined the life for Nigerian women and those who dwelled in the rural areas.
Under this program, the vast majority of rural women and, indeed men, voluntarily mobilized themselves into functional co-operatives to pursue the benefits of communal joint-effort and self-help.
Practically, every field of human endeavor in agriculture, craft and art was covered by the co-operatives; and with easier access to soft loans and grants.
The TNP boss prayed that her soul continues to rest in peace as he called on other privileged women in Nigeria to emulate the approach of the late first lady towards human and societal development.
