AIYEDATIWA PLEDGES TOTAL COMMITMENT TO FISHERIES SECTOR AS ONDO CELEBRATES WORLD FISHERIES DAY
To mark World Fisheries Day 2025, the Ondo State Government, in collaboration with artisanal fishermen and fish farmers, through the Department of Fisheries Services (Agriculture Sub‑Sector) of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, highlighted the vital role the fishing industry plays in the state’s economy and the livelihood of its people.
In an address delivered by the Commissioner for Agriculture and Forestry, Engr. Leye Akinola on behalf of Governor His Excellency Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, the Governor said it is a joy to witness this year’s celebration in the state. The theme, “Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture Practices for the Future,” is apt and important, serving as a clarion call to recognize both the opportunities our waters present and the responsibility to preserve them for future generations.
The Governor noted that the fisheries and aquaculture sector is a cornerstone of Ondo’s socio‑economic development. It provides livelihoods for thousands of families, fuels local and regional trade, and contributes significantly to food and nutritional security. He emphasized that the sector faces challenges such as climate change, pollution, over‑fishing, and unsustainable practices, and calls for approaches that protect biodiversity while enhancing productivity.
He pledged the administration’s unwavering commitment to a resilient and sustainable fisheries sector, citing collaboration with AFFAN, CAFFAN, and private‑sector partners to implement measures that increase productivity and safeguard aquatic ecosystems. These initiatives include:
Promoting modern, environmentally‑friendly aquaculture systems.
Strengthening regulations to curb destructive fishing practices. Empowering fisherfolk through training, access to modern technology, and essential tools Expanding extension services to ensure knowledge reaches every fishing community.
Investing in data‑driven management to sustainably harness aquatic resources.
The Governor expressed confidence that deliberate efforts will ensure the bounty of Ondo’s waters continues to nourish its people today and in the future.
In his remarks, Commissioner Engr. Leye Akinola described fisheries as a backbone of the economy and a key government priority. Speaking through Permanent Secretary Mrs. Foluke Tunde‑Daramola, he thanked sponsors and supporters of the 2025 World Fisheries Day celebration and affirmed that the sector is unique and lucrative.
Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Youth Empowerment and Job Creation, Mr. Orioye Gbaisemore, highlighted the theme’s profound meaning, stressing the importance of protecting aquatic biodiversity, promoting responsible fishing, and engaging youth to bring innovation and digital solutions to the sector.
Earlier, Permanent Secretary Mrs. Iyabo Olaleye, represented by the Director of the Department of Fisheries Services, welcomed participants and thanked all stakeholders for their support, noting that the day is an annual global event aimed at enhancing fisheries management and sustainable practices.
According to a statement signed by the Head of Media and Public Relations of the ministry, Sola Omoboyowa, the celebration concluded with goodwill messages and a commitment from all parties to cooperate with the state government in realizing the full potential of Ondo’s aquatic resources for the benefit of all.
