FG ARRAIGNS SUSPECTS OVER BENUE KILLINGS MONDAY
The Federal Government has said it will today (Monday) arraign suspects arrested in connection with the killings in Yelwata, a community in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.
The suspects, said to be strongly linked to the attacks, will be arraigned before Justice Joyce Abdul-Malik of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja.
The Office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice disclosed that the arraignment followed a painstaking investigation and collaboration among relevant government agencies.
In a statement on Sunday, the Special Adviser to the President on Communication and Publicity in the Office of the AGF and Minister of Justice, Kamarudeen Ogundele, said some of the suspects arrested in connection with the killings would be brought before the court on Monday, February 2.
“Some suspects arrested and strongly linked to the killings in Yelwata, a town in Benue State, will be arraigned tomorrow (Monday, February 2) to answer for their crimes
“They will be arraigned before Justice Joyce Abdul-Malik of the Federal High Court, Abuja. This comes after a painstaking investigation and collaboration by government agencies,” the statement read.
The statement added that the suspects would be prosecuted to send “a strong signal” to those described as enemies of the country, regardless of the guise under which they operate.
Suspected gunmen attacked Yelwata on the night of Friday, June 13, 2025, killing scores of villagers.
Following the attack, the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, and the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, announced a joint, cross-border operation targeting the attackers.
On June 24, 2025, Egbetokun announced the arrest of 53 suspects over attacks in Benue and Plateau States, adding that 26 of them were linked to the Yelwata killings.
The AGF’s office assured Nigerians that justice would be served in the matter, stressing that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remained committed to the protection of lives and property, in line with constitutional provisions.
