ALL DEMOCRATIC ALLIANCE FAULTS CHILDREN’S DAY CELEBRATIONS AMID SCHOOL CHILDREN IN CAPTIVITY
The All Democratic Alliance (ADA) is deeply concerned by the decision of government at various levels to proceed with elaborate celebrations and fanfare for Children’s Day while a number of Nigerian children remain in captivity at the hands of kidnappers and terrorists.
In statement by the National Publicity Secretary, Honour Leye Igbabo, he said “Children’s Day is meant to affirm the right of every child to safety, dignity, and joy. It is contradictory and callous to mark the day with parades, concerts, and pageantry when some children cannot celebrate because they are being held against their will, and when their parents are living in grief and uncertainty”.
“Government ought to have observed a moment of sobriety and national reflection under the circumstances. The principle is clear: an injury to one is an injury to all. When even one Nigerian child is held in captivity, it diminishes the dignity and future of every child in this country”.
“To ignore that reality and carry on with celebration as usual is to insult the pain of the affected families and to trivialize the duty of the state to protect its most vulnerable citizens”.
“ADA calls on the government to suspend non-essential fanfare and redirect energy and resources toward securing the release of all abducted children and preventing further abductions”.
“What Nigerians need on Children’s Day is action, accountability, and a visible commitment to securing the lives of children, not optics and ceremonies that deepen the sense of abandonment”.
“We stand in solidarity with the children still in captivity and with their parents”.
“Until every child is free and safe, there can be no genuine reason to celebrate”, the statement added.
