ONDO SLASHES WHOLE CHICKEN PRICE TO N5000 IN BOLD MOVES TO CUSHION RISING FOOD COSTS
The Ondo State Government has commenced the sale of whole frozen chickens at a subsidised price of ₦5,000 per bird as part of efforts to ease the impact of rising food prices and improve residents’ access to affordable sources of protein.
The initiative, implemented through the Ondo State Agri-business Empowerment Centre (OSAEC), commenced on Tuesday, 21 October, 2026 is designed to provide relief to households grappling with the rising cost of food across the state.
Each frozen chicken weighs between 1.3kg and 1.6kg and is being sold at the fixed subsidised price of ₦5,000, significantly below prevailing market rates.
Frozen chicken currently sells for between ₦6,500 and ₦7,000 per kilogram in many markets, making the government-backed initiative a more affordable option for households.
Speaking on the programme, the Chairman of OSAEC, Hon. Rotimi Wemimo Akinsola, said the initiative was being implemented on behalf of the Governor of Ondo State, His Excellency, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, as part of the administration’s commitment to easing the financial burden on residents.
“Families are feeling the pressure of rising food prices. We want every household in Ondo State to be able to afford quality protein, so we are selling full chickens at a subsidised rate of ₦5,000,” Akinsola said.
He explained that the intervention aligns with OSAEC’s broader mandate to promote food security, strengthen agribusiness development and enhance access to affordable food across Ondo State.
According to him, the initiative reflects the government’s recognition of the need for practical interventions that address the cost-of-living challenges facing ordinary citizens, particularly in meeting essential household food needs.
Akinsola urged residents to take advantage of the subsidised sale and expressed appreciation to Governor Aiyedatiwa for his support for programmes aimed at improving food affordability and the welfare of the people.
According to a statement signed by the media officer in the agency, Adebimpe Akinduyite, the subsidised chickens are available for purchase at the OSAEC office, located opposite the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) office along Obafemi Awolowo Way, Alagbaka, Akure.
Interested residents are advised to contact OSAEC directly for further information on the sale.
