CENTENARY: ADEKUNLE FAJUYI LEADERSHIP SUMMIT HONOURS NATIONAL HERO AS FAMILY SEEKS GREATER NATIONAL RECOGNITION
The enduring legacy of Nigeria’s legendary soldier and patriot, Lieutenant-Colonel Francis Adekunle Fajuyi, came into sharp focus at the Adekunle Fajuyi Leadership Summit, organised by students of Adekunle Fajuyi Hall, Obafemi Awolowo University (formerly the University of Ife), as part of activities marking the centenary of the late military officer’s birth.
The summit, themed “Leadership Legacy in Nigeria: Honouring the Past, Addressing the Present, Shaping the Future,” brought together students, academics, members of the Fajuyi family, alumni and distinguished guests to reflect on the life, sacrifice and enduring leadership values of one of Nigeria’s most respected national heroes.
Speaking during the event, the Chairman of Adekunle Fajuyi Hall, Opeyemi Michael Awoniyi, said the summit was conceived to preserve the memory of Lt. Col. Fajuyi and inspire a new generation of Nigerians through the exemplary virtues that defined his life.
According to him, the programme seeks to expose young people to the timeless principles of courage, loyalty, integrity, sacrifice and responsible leadership, values that remain indispensable to Nigeria’s quest for national development and ethical governance.
“The life of Lt. Col. Adekunle Fajuyi represents the highest ideals of patriotism and selfless service. It is our responsibility as students and future leaders to ensure that these values are preserved and transmitted to succeeding generations,” Awoniyi said.
A major highlight of the summit was an emotional address by Princess Adesola Monica Fajuyi-Olajuyigbe, daughter of the late military governor, who offered a deeply personal reflection on her father’s life and character.
She described Lt. Col. Fajuyi as a man whose unwavering commitment to honour, loyalty and principle transcended personal ambition, noting that his ultimate sacrifice remains one of the finest examples of patriotism in Nigeria’s history.
Princess Fajuyi-Olajuyigbe expressed profound appreciation to the management, students, alumni and leadership of Adekunle Fajuyi Hall for sustaining her father’s legacy through continuous educational and leadership initiatives.
She observed that such programmes would enable younger Nigerians to better understand the historical significance of Lt. Col. Fajuyi’s life and appreciate the values for which he stood.
The leadership summit formed part of broader activities commemorating what would have been the 100th birthday of Lt. Col. Francis Adekunle Fajuyi.
The centenary celebration attracted students, members of the Fajuyi family and admirers from different parts of the country, all united in celebrating a life defined by uncommon courage, sacrifice and unwavering patriotism.
As the first Military Governor of Nigeria’s former Western Region, Lt. Col. Fajuyi occupies a unique place in the nation’s history.
He is widely remembered for his extraordinary act of loyalty during the July 1966 counter-coup, when he chose to remain with the then Head of State, Major General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, despite knowing the grave danger involved.
Rather than abandon his superior to save himself, Fajuyi stood by him until both men were assassinated at Lalupon, near Ibadan. That singular act of courage has continued to define his legacy as one of Nigeria’s greatest symbols of honour, integrity and selfless leadership.
During separate interviews, Princess Fajuyi-Olajuyigbe commended the Ekiti State Government for the remodelling of the Fajuyi Memorial Park in Ado-Ekiti, describing the project as a significant step towards preserving the memory of one of Nigeria’s foremost patriots and ensuring that future generations continue to learn from his exemplary life.
She however, appealed to the Federal Government to accord Lt. Col. Adekunle Fajuyi greater national recognition through the conferment of an appropriate posthumous national honour.
According to her, formally recognising his sacrifice would reinforce national values of integrity, courage, loyalty and selfless service while inspiring young Nigerians to place national interest above personal ambition.
Princess Fajuyi-Olajuyigbe also called on the Oyo State Government to revisit the proposed Aguiyi-Ironsi and Adekunle Fajuyi National Memorial Park at Lalupon, the historic location where both leaders were assassinated during the July 1966 counter-coup.
She recalled that the memorial project received approval during the administration of the late Governor Abiola Ajimobi and expressed optimism that the state government would revive the initiative as a permanent national monument dedicated to the sacrifices of the two leaders.
She noted that, as Nigeria continues its journey towards national renewal and institutional rebuilding, this is an appropriate moment to celebrate leaders whose lives exemplified patriotism, courage and uncommon sacrifice.
According to her, honouring national heroes such as Lt. Col. Adekunle Francis Fajuyi would reinforce the ideals of responsible leadership and demonstrate that integrity, loyalty and service remain the bedrock of sustainable nation-building.
Participants at the summit echoed similar sentiments, stressing that the challenges confronting contemporary Nigeria require leaders who embody the principles exemplified by Lt. Col. Fajuyi.
The event concluded with renewed calls for governments, educational institutions and Nigerians across generations to preserve the memory of the late military officer and ensure that his remarkable legacy continues to inspire ethical leadership, national unity and patriotic service.
One hundred years after his birth, the name Lt. Col. Francis Adekunle Fajuyi continues to resonate as a powerful reminder that true leadership is measured not by the offices one occupies, but by the courage to uphold honour, loyalty and duty—even at the ultimate cost.
