Residents of Bariga are once again living in fear after a renewed attack on the home of community leader and Ward Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Edward Oluwaniyi.
The latest incident occurred on October 30, 2025, when unidentified men reportedly stormed his residence at 3 Onabola Street in what witnesses described as a coordinated operation.
The development has reignited concerns about the safety of Mr. Oluwaniyi and his family.
Neighbours said the attackers went from house to house asking for Mr. Oluwaniyi, his wife, and their children.
Unbeknownst to the assailants, the family had already relocated for security reasons.
After failing to locate them, the men allegedly vandalised parts of the area and reportedly vowed to track the family down wherever they might be.
The attack has brought back memories of a similar incident on September 6, 2021, when Mr. Oluwaniyi narrowly survived an ambush by about five suspected assailants.
Witnesses said he was knocked down with a vehicle and brutally assaulted, sustaining serious injuries.
He was later rescued by a passerby and rushed to Adekola Hospital for emergency treatment.
At the time, residents said the attackers allegedly threatened to wipe out his entire household — a threat many now fear is being revived.
Community members describe Mr. Oluwaniyi as a grassroots mobiliser known for resolving disputes, assisting vulnerable residents, and strengthening party structures within his ward.
Some residents believe his growing political profile may have made him a target.
The renewed attack has heightened tension across the neighbourhood, with many questioning their own safety.
“If someone like Edward can be attacked twice, then no one is truly safe,” a community elder remarked.
In response to the earlier incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Police Force Lagos State Command, Adekunle Ajisebutu, confirmed the case and assured residents that efforts were ongoing to apprehend those responsible and strengthen security in the area.
For many residents, the repeated attacks transcend partisan politics. They underscore the broader insecurity confronting individuals who choose to serve their communities.
As investigations continue, concerns remain over accountability, protection, and the persistence of violent rivalries in grassroots politics.
