ONDO GOVT CALLS FOR INCREASED AWARENESS AND PREVENTION FOR HEPATITIS
The Ondo State, Commissioner for Health, Dr Banji Awolowo Ajaka has made a call for increased awareness for Hepatitis and prevention amongst the people living in the state saying about 19million Nigerians are living with hepatitis.
He stated this while speaking on the commemoration of 2023 World Hepatitis Day tagged “One life, one liver” in Akure the state capital
Ajaka said it was important that massive awareness be created on the danger and prevention of hepatitis as it continues to pose a threat to public health worldwide
” No fewer than 19million people are infected with the virus in Nigeria and the government in collaboration with stakeholders especially World Health Organization is putting effort to eradicate it in the country”.
According to the Media Officer in the ministry, Bisi Lawani, the commissioner stressed that the disease was bedevilled with low awareness by the general public and low coverage of testing and treatment which he described as gaps to be addressed in the elimination of the disease.
Ajaka therefore highlighted the importance of protecting the liver against hepatitis for living a long and healthy while saying good liver health benefits other vital organs including the heart, brain and kidneys that rely on the liver to function.
Hepatitis causes liver damage and cancer and kills over a million people annually. Of the 5 types of hepatitis infections, hepatitis B and C cause most of the disease and death.
