Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has condemned Monday’s invasion of Obafemi Awolowo University ( OAU ) Ile – Ife by some indigenes and traditionalists saying the action represents an assault on all stakeholders of the tertiary institution. .
In a statement by his chief press secretary, Richard Olatunde, governor Akeredolu was quick to remind the protesters reportedly demanding the appointment of an Ife indigene as Vice – Chancellor that the institution was founded by visionary leaders of southwest Nigeria who desired nothing but the best in tertiary education for generations yet unborn.
The governor who is also the chairman southwest governors forum regretted the events of the last few days, saying they clearly show that Nigerian universities seem preoccupied with issues too distant from qualitative education and life – transforming research which are the hallmarks of ivory towers across the globe.
While cautioning people who have no business with academic environment to steer off the citadel of learning, Akeredolu who is also an alumnus of the school urged authorities of the institution to weigh in on the strange phenomenon creeping into the university system without delay.
