The location was the Nigeria Union of Journalists House at GRA area of Ado-Ekiti where politicians, academics, traditional authorities as well as men of the media profession in the state and beyond gathered.
The event was the 2022 NUJ Press Day of the Broadcasting Service of Ekiti State Chapel of the union with the theme “Broadcast Media and Expectations in the 2023 General Elections”.
Doing justice to this topic was the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, Professor Abayomi Fasina who harped on the role of the media as the nation approaches the 2023 general elections.
The Don who was represented by Professor Jeremiah Omotola laid emphasis on the need for societal orientation as he charged the media to be more accurate in their reportage.
He charged Journalists to embrace transparency and truthfulness in their news reportage, adding that media platforms should be accessible to all political parties.
The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Ekiti State, Mr. Rotimi Ojomoyela who spoke through the secretary, Mr. Kayode Babatuyi called on media practitioners within and outside the state to explore the use of advanced information technology to improve their services.
High point of the event was the presentation of the “Most Outstanding Politician of the Year Award” in Ekiti State to a Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and an international business mogul, Mr. Dele Philips.
Organisers of the event described the Aramoko-Ekiti-born philanthropist as a great encouragement for a guaranteed democracy in Nigeria as they reflected on his impact on his party as well as the people of his federal constituency.
The Chairman of Nigeria Union of Journalists, BSES Chapel, Mr. Kelechi David highlighted the various Interventionist programmes that had been carried out by the awardee through his NGO, Dele Philips Foundation.
The Chairman noted that both market women and school children have been benefitting from his philanthropic approach to life as communities have also benefited as a people.
Mr. David added that the spirit of sportsmanship displayed by the awardee in the last build-up to the 2023 general elections should be emulated by all politicians who are desirous of a high degree of growth in the nation’s democratic existence.
Reacting, the Most Outstanding Politician of the Year in Ekiti State, Mr. Dele Philips described the recognition as a challenge to do more for both his party as well as his people, noting that various programmes are being put together to put smiles on the faces of the people, especially the less privileged.
Dele Philips assured the media in Ekiti State that he would never disappoint them and called on all practitioners to always be on the side of truth, accuracy as well as service to the people.
The event was witnessed by the Secretary to Ekiti State Government, Alhaja Habibat Adubiaro who was represented by SSA on Special Duties, Femi Aduloju and the General Manager of Broadcasting Service of Ekiti State, Mr. Olu Popoola.
The event was also graced by traditional rulers who include the Obaleo of Erinmope-Ekiti, Oba Sunday Aikuirawo and the Olupoti of Ipoti-Ekiti, Oba Oladipupo Kolade.
