STRAY BULLETS HIT FIVE IN EKITI
Five persons in Ado-Ekiti, the capital of Ekiti State, have been hospitalized after hit by bullets allegedly fired by an officer of the Ekiti State Agro Marshals.
The incident, which has caused panic and tension, occurred at about 6:30 PM on Friday in the Ekute area of the community.
The victims, who are reportedly passersby are currently receiving treatment at a government health facility in the town.
It was gathered that there was a ceremony on the popular Ekute road, which caused mild traffic congestion.
The Agro Marshals’ vehicle, conveying some officers, was also caught in the traffic.
It was alleged that one of the officers jumped down from the vehicle to clear the road for their vehicle. In the process, he started shooting into the air, and some of the bullets strayed and hit the victims, among whom were his colleagues.
Respondents alleged that it was obvious that the concerned officer was trigger-happy and lacked the skills and training for proper weapon handling.
Speaking with newsmen at the Police Clinic in Ado-Ekiti, two officers who were hit by the bullets claimed that it was an accidental discharge.
The Commandant of the Agro Marshal Corps, Mr. Olamide Oni said the concerned officer has been detained and will be handed over to the police for proper investigation.
Confirming the incident, the Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Akinwale Adeniran, said, “The Agro Marshals were passing through the street. I think one of them was armed with a locally made single-barrel gun. Maybe his hand touched the trigger, and in the process, the gun fired and injured some people moving on the road and at the same time injured some of them in the vehicle they were moving with.
“The victims are already stable, and we are taking care of them. The person responsible is in custody and has been detained,” he stated.
